La marca turística de las islas tiene su origen en
la mitología, en la obra de Homero, quien estableció
en este archipiélago el primer destino
de salud y naturaleza de Europa , al bautizarlo
como la Macaronesia. Las Islas Afortunadas.
Durante siglos se consolidó como parada y fonda
entre Europa y el mundo, desde que Cristóbal
Colón hizo de Gran Canaria escala global.
A él le seguirán aventureros, conquistadores,
científicos, viajeros... Todos supieron del excelente
clima y sus aguas dando lugar a 6 balnearios,
junto a 13 Hoteles en la ciudad y 2 en Tafira,
de gran calidad para ‘invalids’ víctimas de
la contaminación industrial y el clima insalubre.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria cuenta desde hace
130 años con el primer Club de Golf y la primera
Sociedad filarmónica de España.
Anfi del Mar
Gran Canaria es testigo de la revolución aeronáutica.
Gago Coutinho y Sacadura Cabral, la
travesía del Plus Ultra, el Zepelín y Saint-Exupéry.
Se va adaptando a los nuevos modos de
transporte, como haría posteriormente con los
vuelos chárter y otros tipos de modelos de negocio
y conectividad.

The islands’ tourist brand has their origins rooted
in mythology. The works of Homer established the
first health and nature destination in Europe here
on the archipelago, when he christened it Macaronesia,
the Fortunate Isles.
Over the centuries Gran Canaria has gained a reputation
for being a link between Europe and the
rest of the world, ever since Christopher Columbus
made it a global stopover. Adventurers, conquerors,
scientists and travellers all followed in his footsteps.
All of them knew about the excellent climate
and its waters, giving rise to six spas, together with
13 hotels in the city and a further two in Tafira, of
great quality for invalids, victims of industrial pollution
and the unhealthy climate. Las Palmas de Gran
Canaria became home to Spain’s first golf club and
the first Philharmonic Society, some 130 years ago.
Gran Canaria also bore witness to the aeronautical
revolution in the shape of Gago Coutinho and
Sacadura Cabral, the crossing of the Plus Ultra,
the Zeppelin and Saint-Exupéry. It adapted to new
modes of transport, as it would do later with charter
flights and other types of business and connectivity
models.
Artist Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre created
the first theme park in Spain, based on the typical
Canary Island village, in 1952. And four years later,
the Jardín Canario, Spain’s largest botanical garden,
was launched.
While these changes in Gran Canaria’s tourist offer
and image were taking place, the 'chones' (taken
from the name Johnny, used to describe mostly
English foreign tourists) gave way to the Scandinavians.
Since then, Gran Canaria has been their
leading world destination. They even had their own
voice on the radio, with Swedish actor Ingemar Palin.
Tourism then moved to the south. The Maspalomas
Costa Canaria International Ideas Competition
attracted 141 teams from all continents, together
with Scandanavian investors. The first Spanish
tourist city thus came into being, with the first Heliotherapy
Centre, the first film theme park ('Sioux
Aldrin, Collins y Armstrong en Canarias
City', where films were shot with actors such as Lee
Van Cleef), and the country’s first tourist flying club.
The island has also become the world's most popular
destination for repeat visitors, the first capital
of peace and one of the world’s main destinations
for LGTBI tourism.
The climate, landscapes and nature became fundamental
elements of the island’s tourist product.
Environmental concerns and awareness began to
grow among the islanders, leading to the creation
of the first environmental association in Spain, Ascan,
which promoted conservationist initiatives.
Gran Canaria is the flagship of several tourism companies
such as RIU, where it has the majority of its
establishments, and where the first of its Palace
hotels was designed. The family, originally from
Olot, brought their professional experience to this
fledgling destination. Years later, tourism companies
with investment capital from the island would
emerge that would take their knowledge and experience
to other destinations, companies including
Lopesan, Gloria, Cordial, The Hotels, Seaside, and
the Anfi group, created by the Norwegian inventor
Bjorn Lyng, creator of the Elsafe safety deposit box
patent, as well as diamond oil well drill heads. But
his global success was Anfi del Mar, which became
the world's leading luxury time share resort.
There are countless people who were based in Gran
Canaria who have made history in tourism around
the world, such as Bertil Harding and her charter
flights with Scandanavian countries; German Lilo
Kellerman, creator of Lilolandia, now known as
Bahía Feliz; or the dream of bohemian aristocrat
Rafael Neville to build a new Marbella in Puerto
de Mogán. Not forgetting the island tour known
to millions of Chinese through the presence and
tragic events experienced by Chinese writer Echo
Chen, under the pseudonym of Sanmao.
The tourism legend lives on through these - and
many more - characters and events, although the
fundamental thing about Gran Canaria is that it is
the ideal and healthiest place for four million climate
migrants who come here annually to spend
their seasons in the sun.

cuatro años después se pone en marcha el Jardín
Canario, el de mayor superficie de España.
Mientras se producen estos cambios en la oferta
y la imagen turística de Gran Canaria, los
'chones' dan paso a los escandinavos. Desde
entonces Gran Canaria es su principal destino
en el mundo. Y tuvieron su propia voz en la radio,
con el actor sueco Ingemar Palin.
El turismo se desplaza al sur. El Concurso Internacional
de Ideas Maspalomas Costa Canaria
atrajo 141 equipos de todos los continentes. Y
a inversores nórdicos. Nació la primera ciudad
turística española. El primer Centro Helioterápico,
el primer parque temático cinematográfico
(‘Sioux City’, donde se rodaron películas con
actores como Lee Van Cleef), con el primer aeroclub
turístico en España, y se ha convertido
en el destino mundial que más repiten sus visitantes,
la primera capital de la paz y uno de los
principales destinos del turismo LGTBI mundial.
El clima, la naturaleza, el paisaje, se convierten
en elementos fundamentales del producto turístico,
creciendo la preocupación y la conciencia
ambientalista entre los isleños, por lo que
surge la primera asociación ecologista de España,
Ascan, quienes impulsaron las iniciativas
conservacionistas.
Gran Canaria es el buque insignia de varias empresas
turísticas como RIU, donde tiene más
establecimientos y se diseñó el primero de sus
Palace. La familia originaria de Olot aportó la
experiencia profesional a este destino en pleno
desarrollo. Años después surgirían empresas
turísticas de capital isleño que llevarían su
conocimiento y experiencia a otros destinos,
como Lopesan, Gloria, Cordial, The Hotels, Seaside...
O el grupo Anfi, creado por el inventor
noruego Bjorn Lyng, creador de la patente de
cajas de seguridad Elsafe, así como cabezas de
perforadoras de pozos de petróleo con diamantes.
Pero su éxito global fue Anfi del Mar, que se
convertiría en el principal complejo de lujo en
el mundo del fenómeno del turismo de tiempo
compartido (‘time sharing’).
Son innumerables las personas que hicieron
historia en el turismo en el mundo, desde Gran
Canaria, como Bertil Harding y sus chárter con
los países nórdicos; la alemana Lilo Kellerman,
creadora de Lilolandia, ahora conocida como
Bahía Feliz; o el sueño marbellí del aristócrata
bohemio Rafael Neville en Puerto de Mogán.
Sin olvidar la ruta isleña que conocen millones
de chinos por la presencia y trágicos acontecimientos
vividos por la escritora Echo Chen, con
el seudónimo de Sanmao.
La leyenda perdura a través de estos -y muchos
más- personajes y acontecimientos, aunque lo
fundamental es que la isla de Gran Canaria es el
lugar ideal, el más saludable. Donde 4 millones
de migrantes climáticos pasan sus temporadas
al sol.
