6 GET TO KNOW GRAN CANARIA I CONOCE GRAN CANARIA Nº 14 10 beaches in Gran Canaria that you won’t find in any travel guide playas de Gran Canaria que no encontrarás en las guías de viajes Por Miguel Díaz The stunning golden sandy beaches are possibly Gran Canaria's biggest tourist attraction. The Maspalomas Dunes, Playa del Inglés and Amadores are all a must in travel guides. However, the south of the island has much more coastline to offer visitors: beaches off the beaten track where visitors can unwind and enjoy truly relaxing surroundings. On a relatively small island, there are few places - and even fewer if we are talking about sand and sea - that have not been conquered by humans. In the south of Gran Canaria, where tourist activity is at its highest and where most of the accommodation establishments are concentrated, it is harder still. With this premise in mind, this list attempts to highlight a number of places that are less known to the general public, but which are much appreciated by the local population. Las espectaculares playas de arena dorada son posiblemente el mayor reclamo turístico de Gran Canaria. Las Dunas de Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Amadores… son ‘must’ en las guías de viajes. Sin embargo, el sur de la isla tiene mucho más litoral que ofrecer al visitante: playas fuera de las rutas donde poder desconectar y tener un momento de verdadero relax. En una isla relativamente pequeña ya existen pocos lugares -y menos si hablamos de arena y mar- sin ser conquistados por el ser humano. En el sur de Gran Canaria, donde la actividad turística es más intensa y donde se concentran la mayoría de establecimientos alojativos es aún más difícil. Partiendo de esa premisa, en este listado hemos intentado congregar algunos lugares menos conocidos para el gran público, pero muy apreciados entre la población local. 1 1. Las Burras San Bartolomé de Tirajana This is possibly the most overlooked beach in travel guides. Located at the heart of the busiest tourist area, between San Agustín and the large centre of Playa del Inglés, this beach offers a real family atmosphere, as it is very quiet and has plenty of facilities all around. Parking may be one of its negative points, but it is well communicated with the larger cities in the south of the island. 1. Las Burras San Bartolomé de Tirajana Posiblemente, esta playa sea la gran olvidada de las guías de viaje. Situada en el corazón de la zona más turística, entre San Agustín y el gran núcleo de Playa del Inglés, se trata de una playa con un ambiente familiar, muy tranquila y que cuenta con múltiples servicios alrededor. El aparcamiento puede ser uno de sus puntos negativos si vas con coche, pero tiene buena comunicación con las grandes urbes del sur de la isla. 2 2. El Veril San Bartolomé de Tirajana Many tourists confuse El Veril beach with Playa del Inglés, as the two expanses of sand practically run into each other. If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big beaches in the south of the island, El Veril is an excellent choice. If you're staying near the Costa Canaria promenade, it is just a walk away. You will find it in a northerly direction. In addition to its peaceful surroundings, it features a rock formation in the form of a dyke that acts as a wave and windbreak. 2. El Veril San Bartolomé de Tirajana Muchos turistas confunden la playa de El Veril con la Playa del Inglés, pues ambas están prácticamente unidas por la arena. Si buscas huir del bullicio de las grandes playas del sur de la isla, El Veril es una excelente opción. Si te alojas cerca del paseo marítimo Costa Canaria, puedes ir incluso a pie. Lo encontrarás en dirección norte. Además de su tranquilidad, cuenta con una formación rocosa en forma de dique que frena olas y viento.

Pasito Blanco San Bartolomé de Tirajana The beach at Pasito Blanco sports marina - officially El Hornillo beach - is a great option if you are looking to get away from the packed tourist areas, but not go too far away. Barely 200 metres long, it is not that frequented, even by the local population (it is reserved mainly for the inhabitants of the neighbouring urbanisations). There are two reasons for this: there are not many local facilities, and you have to walk 500 metres from the nearest car park, as there is a barrier that restricts access to the beach. 3. Pasito Blanco San Bartolomé de Tirajana La playa del muelle deportivo de Pasito Blanco -oficialmente, playa de El Hornillo- es una gran opción si buscas alejarte de los núcleos turísticos, pero no demasiado. Con apenas 200 metros de longitud, es muy poco frecuentada incluso por la población local (reservada principalmente para los habitantes de las urbanizaciones aledañas). Dos razones: no hay muchos servicios por la zona y hay que andar 500 metros desde el aparcamiento más cercano, ya que una barrera restringe el acceso. 3 4. Montaña Arena San Bartolomé de Tirajana Despite its close proximity to several tourist resorts, Montaña Arena retains much of its wild character and is highly lauded by part of the island's population. The beach has a very special spirit, as it includes an area set aside for nudists and animal lovers, and it offers a particular sense of freedom. It can only be reached on foot along two paths, one from Playa de Las Carpinteras and the other, the most common, from the main road. Be aware, however, as there is no mobile phone coverage on the sand. Total disconnection is guaranteed. 4. Montaña Arena San Bartolomé de Tirajana A pesar de su cercanía a varios núcleos turísticos, Montaña Arena conserva gran parte de su carácter salvaje y es muy apreciada por una parte de la población isleña. Una playa con un espíritu muy especial, en la que podrás encontrar nudistas, animalistas y un particular ambiente de libertad. Solamente se puede acceder a ella andando por dos veredas, una desde la Playa de las Carpinteras y otra, la más habitual, desde la carretera. Ojo, en la arena no hay cobertura móvil. Desconexión total. 4
