Visiting Valsequillo in summer
Strawberries, cheese, potatoes, almonds, honey and wine are part of the identity of
Valsequillo, a town in the mid hills that has moved forward without leaving behind its
primary sector, which continues to represent the municipality’s present and future.

miel o vinos son parte de las señas
de identidad de Valsequillo, una localidad
de medianías que ha sabido
avanzar sin olvidar su sector primario
que sigue siendo presente y futuro
del municipio.
Entre sus infinitas virtudes, el municipio de
Valsequillo tiene el encanto de contener
gran parte de la historia de Canarias. En su
zona peatonal encontramos lugares de gran
interés como la Iglesia de San Miguel, que
fue construida entre 1903 y 1923 en el mismo
lugar que antiguamente se ubicaba un
cementerio y donde hubo una ermita levantada
de 1670 a 1672. El turista también puede
visitar el Cuartel de El Colmenar (1530),
en torno al cual se levantan varias edificaciones
vinculadas a la vida castrense. En él
nació el padre del insigne escritor canario D.
Benito Pérez Galdós. En la actualidad constituye
uno de los patrimonios históricos más
importantes de Valsequillo, declarado Bien
de Interés Cultural por el Gobierno de Canarias.
Los parajes naturales de Valsequillo son de
una extraordinaria belleza, como la cabecera
de la Caldera de Tenteniguada con sus
roques, el Barranco de los Cernícalos que
abarca desde La Caldera de los Marteles
hasta el barrio del Lomo Magullo.
Valsequillo se asienta en un fértil valle y se
encuentra rodeado de montañas que superan
los 1600 m de altitud. Un lugar donde
la naturaleza volcánica de la Isla se hace patente
en las formaciones rocosas que surgen
abruptamente, así como en el hundimiento
del suelo de las calderas; todo el territorio
del municipio está salpicado con las formas
a veces sorprendentes que la roca ha adoptado
a lo largo de millones de años.
Among its endless virtues, the municipality of
Valsequillo charmingly contains much of the history
of the Canary Islands. Its pedestrian area is home
to places of great interest, such as the Church of
San Miguel, which was built between 1903 and
1923 in the same place where a cemetery was once
located and where there used to be a hermitage
erected from 1670 to 1672. Tourists can also visit
El Colmenar Barracks, dating from 1530, a site in
which there are several buildings linked to military
life. The father of the famous Canarian writer
Benito Pérez Galdós was born there. At present it
constitutes one of the most important historical
heritage sites in Valsequillo, and has been awarded
the status of Cultural Interest by the Government
of the Canary Islands.
Valsequillo’s natural settings are incredibly beautiful,
such as the head of the Caldera de Tenteniguada
with its rocks, the Barranco de los Cernícalos
ravine that runs from La Caldera de los Marteles to
the neighbourhood of Lomo Magullo.
Valsequillo sits in a fertile valley and is surrounded
by mountains that tower up to over 1,600 m altitude.
It is a place where the volcanic nature of the
island is clearly evident in the steep rock formations,
as well as in the sinking of the ground of the
calderas, or basins; the whole municipality is dotted
with the sometimes surprising forms that the
rock has been shaped into over millions of years.
The area’s relatively humid climate and its abundance
of springs cover the countryside of Valsequillo
like a green carpet, and splash it with a burst
of colours of flowering plants which, depending on
the species, cover it from December to June. There
are hundreds of varieties of plants, many endemic
to the Canary Islands, exclusive to the island and
even to the local area. Among them, the one that
most attracts the visitor's attention is the blue tajinaste,
bush, whose colour contrasts with the yellow
of the Canary houseleek, laburnum and broom,
the white of the white brooms and brush, and the
flowers of fruit plants, especially the white and pink
of the almond trees in February.
In addition, Valsequillo is a paradise for hikers
where, through its impressive routes, visitors are
treated to its geology, flora and fauna, all within
reach of accessible walks that anyone can tackle.
And along the way, ramblers will come across the
locally grown products, such as cheese, wines and
strawberries, which, of course, are also the star features
of these routes.
Visiting and staying in Valsequillo is really straightforward,
since the municipality has many fine attractions
associated with ecotourism, tourism in
contact with nature and dozens of sport-related
activities. These sports activities have been so successful
in recent years that they have led to the
development of a strategic range of businesses
dedicated to tourist and visitor accommodation. In
Valsequillo, the accommodation range has grown
substantially in recent years with the incorporation
of magnificent rural hotels and dream vacation
homes.
El clima relativamente húmedo y la abundancia
de manantiales cubren de verde la
geografía de Valsequillo, y la salpican con el
estallido de colores de la floración, que abarca,
según las especies, de diciembre a junio.
Cientos de variedades de plantas, muchas
endémicas de Canarias, exclusivas de la Isla
e incluso de la zona. Entre ellas, la que más
llama la atención del visitante es el tajinaste
azul, cuyo color contrasta con el amarillo de
los bejeques, los codesos y las retamas, el
blanco de las retamas blancas y los escobones,
y las flores de las plantas frutales, sobre
todo en febrero el blanco y rosado de los almendreros.
Además, Valsequillo es un paraíso para el
senderismo donde a través de sus impresionantes
rutas se puede disfrutar de su geología,
flora y fauna; todo ello, al alcance de
caminatas asequibles que puede recorrer
cualquier persona. Y por el camino, no pueden
faltar los productos de la tierra, como
quesos, vinos y fresas que, por supuesto,
también son protagonistas de estas rutas.
Visitar y alojarse en Valsequillo es sencillo,
ya que el municipio presenta atractivas
ofertas asociadas al ecoturismo, al turismo
de contacto con la naturaleza y decenas
de actividades vinculadas al deporte. Actividades
deportivas que han sido tan exitosas
en los últimos años que ahora existe un
abanico empresarial estratégico dedicado a
alojamientos de turistas y visitantes. En Valsequillo,
