As the excitement around ‘the greatest show on earth’ builds, the ‘halo effect’ of the Games has seen new hotels spring up, transport infrastructure grow and regeneration take place across East London and beyond. London has never looked better, or offered such a variety of experiences to visitors and event planners alike.
Grand old spaces and brand-new places During the past two years, hoteliers have viewed London as the European city for new openings. St Pancras Station is now home to a Victorian masterpiece restored – the fivestar, £150 million Renaissance Marriott Hotel, offering 244 rooms alongside the Eurostar terminal. The Strand has seen the return of its luxury landmark property, the Savoy Hotel, following a £200 million refurbishment, and the five-star 294-room Corinthia property has opened in Whitehall Place, just a short walk from world-class cultural institutions such as the National Gallery and Royal Opera House. In the West End, Starwood has opened its first UK W Hotel in Leicester Square, while Waldorf Astoria Hotels has introduced London Syon Park, set in the 200-acre estate belonging to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. Westminster is also seeing some changes, as St Ermin’s Hotel experienced a rejuvenation earlier this year and 2012 will see the opening of the brand-new InterContinental London Westminster, set in a former Treasury building. Luxury hotel brand the Dorchester Collection recently opened its eighth property. 45 Park Lane offers 45 rooms plus a large penthouse, just yards away from The Dorchester, while Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, together with its new destination brand Aloft Hotels, are due to open the Aloft London ExCeL before the end of 2011. The hotel will offer 252 rooms next to the UK capital’s International Convention Centre and Olympic host venue. During Olympic year the luxury accommodation market will further be extended with the opening of The Wellesley, a 36-suite townhouse property in London’s Knightsbridge district. The Rezidor Hotel Group has also announced plans to build a Park Inn-branded 223-room hotel near ExCeL London. In addition, nearby, Premier Inn has opened its London Greenwich property, located just three miles from London City Airport, and is on the verge of opening a 267-room budget hotel as part of the new Westfield Stratford retail complex, adjacent to the Olympic Stadium.
