Feeding the demand for budget accommodation in the centre of the UK capital, London’s historic Trocadero will open a Tokyo style pod hotel in Piccadilly during 2012. Following the redevelopment, only the Grade II-listed facade will remain, and behind this 350-year-old frontage will be a 495-room hotel. What’s new at London’s attractions On the South Bank, the EDF Energy London Eye has been upgrading one pod at a time over a three-year period with all capsules due to be refurbished by early 2012. Greenwich meanwhile will play host to a number of key openings. The Cutty Sark, one of only three remaining clipper ships from the 19th century, has been fully restored following fire damage and will reopen to the public in 2012. Just around the corner, the Sammy Ofer Wing is being built as an extension to the Greenwich Maritime Museum. The wing will also open in 2012 and is named after an international shipping magnate and philanthropist who gifted £20 million towards the project. Improved transport links to the key Olympic sites include an East London line extension, upgrades to the existing Docklands Light Railway (DLR), and a 225kmh high-speed Javelin service to take spectators from St Pancras to the Olympic Park at Stratford in East London in just seven minutes. Added to this, the redevelopment at King’s Cross Central and St Pancras will completely regenerate the area, allowing for more hotels, homes and public space. Crossrail, a major rail connection across the capital starting from Heathrow Airport has also been given the go-ahead, with completion expected in 2015.
