Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Lucky Bones, just over the Cape May bridge on your 

right. This year-round restaurant is a go-to for locals and a great place 

to stop for dinner after a long day of Christmas shopping.’ 

The vibe: ’Tis the season for a jolly dining experience. Everyone 

working at Lucky Bones was cheerful and working hard to get people 

seated and fed as fast as possible. It was a busy Saturday night, so there 

was a wait but lucky for us, we snagged two seats at the bar to enjoy a 

couple of cocktails to pass the time. One the nicest things about Lucky 

Bones’ bar is the size of it. Their large wooden bar is the first thing you 

see when you step inside and there are seats surrounding three sides. 

You have a great view of all their taps and whatever game they have on 

the TVs. You also get a front-row seat for the mixing of your chosen 

cocktail — which never disappoint. 

The drinks: The aforementioned long day of Christmas shopping 

had Nicole and Dan quite thirsty. Nicole went for her favorite, a lemon 

drop martini complete with a sugar rim. Dan opted for a classic rum 

and coke. We luckily didn’t have to wait long to be seated, so we finished 

our drinks at the table. Once we got settled, Nicole and Dan also 

thought a round of tequila shots couldn’t hurt... it was a Saturday night 

after all. Two shots of Casamigos and a lime — boy did they hit the spot. 

The food: Our server Kadie was awesome and really knew her stuff! 

She went over all the specials with us and sold us on the Brussels sprout 

appetizer — Brussels with blue cheese, bacon and balsamic drizzle. 

Delicious would be an understatement. For our mains, Nicole and Dan 

had the same filet mignon tip sandwich with mushrooms, peppers and 

onions, beer cheese and a side of fries. Plates were spotless by the end 

and there was ZERO room for dessert. That goes against everything I’ve 

ever said in this column, but there was truly no room. Maybe next time. 

The takeaway: Lucky Bones is open for lunch and dinner, and they 

take reservations on Resy. If you pop in and there is a wait, they keep 

things moving... and you’ll have time to enjoy that drink at the bar.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

I 

n Canada it’s pronounced Oondertoo. 

I recently discovered Letterkenny, a very 

funny show on Hulu about a small 

Canadian town and the people who live 

there. There is no other way to explain 

it. I will say I had no idea how much spending 

my teenage years watching every Philadelphia 

Flyers pre- and post-game show would 

inform my 50-something sense of humor. 

I spent the antepenultimate (next-to, 

next-to last) weekend of 2022 playing some 

swell gigs. Friday night was Lund’s Fisheries 

Christmas party at Mudhen in Wildwood. I’m 

hoping to land some regular gigs there next 

year so this was something of an audition 

for Jerry and I. No trio, which I’ll get into 

shortly, but we sounded good (as always), the 

crowd was friendly (and lubricated) and one 

nice lady even made a point to tell us how 

much she loved our Josh Ritter song, “Snow 

Is Gone.” THIS is why you play Josh Ritter and 

Avett Brothers and Zach Williams — for the 

2 percent. The other 98 percent you can play 

your Van Morrisons and whatnots. Thank 

you, Jeanette Dougherty for thinking of us. 

(Side Note: Lund’s does NOT mess around 

with the prizes they raffle off to their employees. 

Big ticket stuff. Hmm… are they hiring?) 

Saturday was a last-minute gig with 

Sugar Dave Hughes at Cold Spring Brewery in 

Historic Cold Spring Village in… Cold Spring. 

The room was packed. Until we started playing, 

then it emptied out. I’d have taken it personally, 

but I know I’m awesome, so it couldn’t 

have been that. The room slowly filled back up, 

some tasty IPAs were had, and they collected 

a box full of toys for the Lower Township toy 

drive. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose. 

And as we speak (around 2pm Sunday 

after that incredible Justin Fields run against 

the Eagles) I’m prepping for my second Terry 

& Jerry gig of the weekend at Washington 

Inn for Family Promise of Cape May, who 

shelter the homeless. It’s pretty awesome. 

Laurie Johnson brought us on board, whom 

I’ve known since directing her son, Alex, as 

Tiny Tim in Scrooge. I don’t want to say how 

long ago that was, but Alex could now play 

Bob Cratchit. Thanks, Laurie. You can accept 

my Facebook friend request any time now. I 

sent it in 2006. 

These gigs supported not only some 

excellent causes, they also supported me. At a 

very important time. So my thanks are sincere 

and not the sarcastic toss-offs you’re used to. 

Why were these gigs duos instead of 

trios, you might ask? Our third part, my wife 

Cathrine, took a spill last Sunday and, in 

layman’s terms, completely f*cked her shoulder.

Cooper. Surgery. A week in the hospital.

It remained dislocated for 

about 28 hours (10am Sunday to 

around 2pm Monday) because 

the little ball at the top of your 

Humerus (arm bone) that goes 

into the little pocket (rotator cuff) 

in your shoulder that makes it 

a shoulder, was snapped off so 

they couldn’t reduce (replace) it. 

Side note: I feel like a decent percentage 

of being a doctor is just 

knowing how to say stuff, but I 

digress. Cath was in agony. And 

if you ever want to feel completely 

useless, stand next to a bed holding 

your wife’s hand while she 

shrieks in pain. Good stuff. 

Over the next 30-ish hours 

I did what I could to keep her 

spirits up as she drifted in and 

out. I eventually came back home 

for work and, by the time you 

read this, she should be home 

recuperating. The rehab process 

will be lengthy, but I expect her to 

tackle it like she tackles me when 

I forget to leave the seat down. 

Aside from the 100s of people 

who swamped our Facebook 

pages, many others have stepped 

up with food, gift cards and cold 

hard cash. They’ll probably be 

mad at me for mentioning it. But 

that’s okay. I’m used to it. Thank 

you Erin and Larry Beaver, Mike 

O’Brien, Cindy Benigno, Mary 

Beth Toewe, Sue Jordan (whom 

I did NOT see at Jester’s), Dawn

fraught several days, but we love 

and appreciate all of you. 

I tried in vain to keep most 

of them from doing anything, 

but swiftly discovered you can’t 

keep good people from doing 

good things. Once we have an 

idea what her post-surgery plan 

is and what our out-of-pocket 

looks like, I may or may not start 

a GoFundMe. The grim reality 

is, famous as I am, I’m not very 

rich. I am also virtually unemployed. 

And, while I have a very 

promising interview lined up, our 

income will soon be shrinking. 

So… here we are. We can’t wait 

to get her home. 

Last time I saw Terry O’Neil 

two years ago he thought he was 

dying. That’s why it was so nice 

to see him at Cold Spring Brewery 

Saturday night. 

I caught Ed McDonough’s 

latest “A Few Guys, A Few Songs, 

A Few Stories” and was unsurprised 

to hear that Cousin Ray 

Heslip saw Wagner in concert. 

Stopped in Jester’s after a gig, 

wondered who was playing, then 

heard Al Olivero’s voice about 20 

feet from the front door. It was Al. 

Al was playing. 

How nice is Steve Bistak 

of Cape Harbor Shell? So nice 

that, even though I bust his 

chops in here regularly, he still 

recommended me for a gig over 

stuffed olives in the Brown Room 

to the owners of Duffinetti’s in 

Wildwood. Honestly, you give 

Steve Bistak enough stuffed 

olives, he’ll tell you anything.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

It seems like only a few weeks ago that 

we were poised for another glorious 

autumn watching migrating hawks fly 

by. And it was, 13 weeks to be exact, but 

the hawks have passed with the season. 

Where once as many as 170 eager hawk 

watchers crowded the hawk watch platform 

at Cape May Point State Park, now there are 

a handful of hopeful die-hard hawk watchers 

and a few casual visitors. The official count 

is over, the year’s tally of 45,500 migrating 

hawks over. Not a bad year by modern standards 

and a new record set for Bald Eagle, 

which are still migrating through. There were 

five on December 4 along with a handful of 

Red-taileds, one Cooper’s Hawk, one Sharpshinned 

and perhaps 100 Turkey Vultures, 

which put on quite a show, swirling in Kettles,” 

then streaming west. Despite the September 

through November parameters of the official 

count, some hawks will trickle through into 

January. Birds like Red-tailed Hawk and adult 

male Northern Harrier (a.k.a. Gray Ghost). 

A dump of snow on New England and 

New York state will send hawks south in 

search of bare ground. Bald Eagles? Any time 

for this grand bird of prey. It takes 5-7 years 

for breeds to reach breeding age and until then 

they are nomadic, go where they find open 

water. A northwest wind any month of the 

year will ferry them to Cape May. 

Your best bet to see migrating birds is 

at the Avalon Sea Watch between 8th and 

9th street. Counts are conducted through 

December and thousands of sea ducks and 

Northern Gannet may pass in a few hours. 

Seabird migration extends into February, 

when the last migrating Red-throated Loons 

pass. And when the Great Lakes freeze, it 

sends a wave of hardy diving ducks and grebes 

in search of open water. To avoid the cold, 

drive to the west end of Sunset Boulevard and 

scan the water around the concrete ship where 

sea birds like loons and scoters concentrate. 

Or take the ferry to Lewes, Delaware. Great 

Cormorants often perch on the breakwater. 

On your crossing you will see Northern 

Gannet, large white birds with black wing 

tips. Or all brown birds with pointed wings 

and faces that fly and glide in tandem. These 

are immature gannets. Gulls? Yes, some, 

including the delicate tern-like Bonaparte’s 

Gull. Laughing Gull? You may find a lingering 

bird, but it will be a brown-backed immature. 

On the jetties you may find tiny sandpipers 

scrambling above the waves. These are Purple 

Sandpipers, a hardy rock piper that winters as 

far north as Greenland.

The Golden Globe nominations came 

out the other day, and I’m still confused 

by the whole process. There 

seem to be more scattegories than 

categories. There is one show that got 

two nominations that I can agree with. 

Netflix’s Wednesday focuses on the daughter 

from the Addams Family. The show is a 

reimagining of the character and the show. 

OK, well… maybe it’s not such a reimagining 

of the character — but the actor in the lead 

deserves her Golden Globe nomination. The 

second was for best television comedy or 

musical — though I wouldn’t call it either (see 

what I mean by Golden Globe scattegories?). 

Jenna Ortega plays the stoic lead without 

breaking character. The 20-year-old has been 

in dozens of films and TV shows, but this is 

her breakout role. 

I’m a bigger fan of Addams family folklore 

than the show or movies. I adored the 

Broadway musical — shout out to Joe Carlucci 

who played Gomez in the South Jersey Ritz 

Theatre production a few years back. Born

from cartoons created by Charles Addams for 

The New Yorker in 1938, the show first aired 

in 1964. Back then, Wednesday was quirky like 

the rest of her family, putting younger brother 

Pugsley in precarious situations. 

The character is the brand-new focal 

point in this show. The challenge was to create 

someone who does more than sit her 

brother in an electric chair “for the fun of 

it.” The trickier part was to also capture her 

original essence while making her the lead. 

Ortega was almost single-handedly responsible 

for the success of definitively clearing 

these hurdles. The writers can certainly take 

their credit, but she really pulled it off. And 

her trippy dance in one of the later episodes is 

getting all kinds of deserved buzz online! 

The story from the first season lasts 10 

episodes. It’s a fun drama mystery where 

Wednesday is sent to yet another boarding 

school. She escaped the last one, and it looks 

like she may escape this one. But then mysterious 

murders arise, and of course this piques 

her interest. Toward one of the mid-season 

episodes, the show starts to feel like a 

teen-centered Archie comic book adaptation. 

But it rebounds nicely and comes back to its 

center… it’s kooky, spooky, ooky center.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, save family the trouble and be prepared! 

It’s the time of year when the most raucous 

debate I want to have with my 

family is whether Die Hard is a Christmas 

movie. I’m team “yes” — the action takes 

place on Christmas Eve, the soundtrack 

is full of holiday music, and there’s a character 

named Holly. My siblings disagree with me 

on this, as on most things, and yet, I would 

do anything for these people. That’s why I’m 

planning my own (hopefully far off) funeral. 

It sounds morbid, but it’s an appropriate 

time to get this chore out of the way. 

As Dickens noted, Christmas is a time of 

ghosts, of “the past, present and future swirling 

around us in the dead of the year.” And 

this unpleasant task is nothing in comparison 

to what John McClane does for his family. 

He falls down the stairs under the weight of 

a large terrorist. He walks barefoot over broken 

glass. He gets shot in the shoulder and 

jumps from a burning building — all before 

the sequel. Surely, I can make a list of my final 

wishes and file it with my will. 

We’ve all seen grieving families scramble 

to arrange a funeral, and we’ve seen them 

quarrel over what the departed would want. 

Spare your family this burden. If you think it’s 

hard to put your ideas down on paper, imagine 

how hard it will be for those left behind. In 

most families, it will come down to one person 

making the hard decisions and the rest of 

the group telling them they did it wrong. 

There is comfort in the expected. The 

folks at Spilker Funeral Home (spilkerfuner- 

alhome.com) have a website offering tips on 

planning ahead. You can pay for all or part 

of your funeral in advance. If you’d like to be 

cremated, look into the rules. Ashes must be 

scattered at least three nautical miles out to 

sea, for example, and some national parks 

require a permit. Consider drafting your obituary, 

especially if you have relationships that 

defy easy characterization. Talk to the people 

you’re considering naming as guardians of 

your minor children, and plan for your pets. 

Some requests are simple — maybe you 

don’t want people to wear black, or you want 

to wear your Eagles jersey for eternity. Other 

requests are less simple. A man named John 

Bowman left a trust to keep his house running, 

with the table set for supper, in case he 

was reincarnated. Andre Tchaikowsky left his 

body to science, except for his skull, which he 

hoped would be used in “Hamlet.” Hotelier 

Leona Helmsley left a multi-million-dollar 

bequest to her dog. Your survivors may not be 

able to provide exactly what you want, but you 

can give them a place to start.

called me. We were having a nice chat about 

sending Christmas cards for the holidays. He 

said, “I designed a Christmas greeting card 

just for you and I think you’ll be impressed.

what it was. I cut off all communication and 

skipped the tree lighting. Should I have said

woman owner who is patients with his anxiety 

would be best for Carmine. 

NALA is a happy and social two-year-old girl. 

She has a lot of energy and loves to play fetch 

and run around the yard. Once she works off 

that energy, she relaxes easily and loves to be 

pet. Nala’s leash-walking skills are improving 

daily, and she enjoys investigating her surroundings. 

She has lived with children before 

but needs a slow introduction to cats. 

CRANBERRY came to the shelter as a stray, 

but she is full of life! She enjoys being around 

people and going for long walks with her 

human — her leash skills are excellent. Cranberry 

is still in the early stages of training and 

needs a home that will work on her puppy 

manners. She’ll thrive as the only pet and with 

older children.

owner moved and left him behind. Floyd is

She was found near the dumpster at the shelter 

in the rain, malnourished and shivering.
