and Polonnaruwa, as well as the cave temples<br />
at Dambulla, make up Sri Lanka’s famed<br />
Cultural Triangle. This picturesque region is<br />
home to many UNESCO-listed sites and is an<br />
ideal base from which to discover Sri Lanka’s<br />
cultural and religious history full of lost cities,<br />
ruined palaces and centuries-old frescoes.<br />

At the heart of the Cultural Triangle lies the<br />
fifth-century Sigiriya rock <strong>for</strong>tress, accessible<br />
via a winding cliff-face staircase. Dambulla’s<br />
Buddhist temple complex is home to an<br />
impressive collection of statues, including a<br />
15-metre-long reclining Buddha. For those who<br />
want to combine culture with wildlife from<br />
July to August, Minneriya National Park and its<br />
impressive gathering of Asiatic elephants can<br />
be visited alongside Polonnaruwa.<br />
Culinary Ceylon, Colombo<br />
Delve deep into the roots of Sri Lankan<br />
cuisine with a delicious seven-course<br />
dining experience. Your host will guide<br />
you through the origins of each course.<br />
Try a variety of Sri Lankan favourites<br />
including hoppers (a type of pancake),<br />
kottu (shredded bread with vegetables,<br />
meat and spices) and lamprais (curry<br />
wrapped in banana leaves).<br />
The main attraction of the south-west coast is<br />
historic Galle and its 17th-century Portuguese<br />
<strong>for</strong>t, which encloses a 36-hectare site complete<br />
with grand mansions, narrow streets and art<br />
galleries with the Handunugoda tea estate<br />
just a short drive away. Along the coast are<br />
numerous villages displaying the region’s<br />
cultural heritage and miles of pristine beaches.<br />
Mirissa is a top whale watching spot, while<br />
Tangalle’s palm-fringed coves are a 20-minute<br />
drive from the cave temples at Mulkirigala.<br />
Further east, Hambantota is an ideal base <strong>for</strong><br />
exploring the nearby national parks of Bundela<br />
and Yala as well as the temples at Kataragama.<br />
The distinct north-east coast, with the shallow<br />
waters of Passikudah, traditional fishing<br />
villages and coral reefs, is best visited from<br />
April to September.<br />

Rural train ride, Hill Country<br />
Enjoy a leisurely train ride in Sri Lanka’s<br />
serene Hill Country. Travel along at just<br />
30km per hour, passing tea plantations,<br />
waterfalls and mountain creeks be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
gradually creeping up into the clouds.<br />
The scenery is spectacular, as are the<br />
glimpses of rural life and the experience<br />
of sharing this journey with the locals who<br />
