Early Portuguese sailors named Taiwan<br />
‘Ilha Formosa’ (‘Beautiful Island’) because of<br />
its breathtaking scenery. On this tour, you<br />
experience the island nation’s beauty firsthand,<br />
as well as its cultural highlights. The<br />
energetic capital, Taipei, is home to possibly<br />
the best collection of Chinese artefacts<br />
in the world, while Sun Moon Lake is an<br />
atmospheric and scenic place to stay. The<br />
countryside is perhaps the biggest surprise,<br />
with deep gorges, snow-capped mountains,<br />
hot springs and tea plantations.<br />

Day 2: Taipei<br />
Arrive and transfer to The Howard Plaza hotel<br />
(or similar) <strong>for</strong> 2 nights. A welcome dinner will<br />

Day 3: Taipei<br />
Full-day tour of Taipei, including the National<br />
Palace Museum, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial<br />
Hall, the Martyrs’ Shrine and Longshan Temple.<br />

Days 4 & 5: Sun Moon Lake<br />
Drive south to the village of Beipu, home to<br />
members of the Hakka ethnic minority group.<br />
See the traditional architecture and sample<br />
Hakka food, then continue to Sun Moon Lake<br />
<strong>for</strong> a 2-night stay at the Einhan Hotel. The<br />
following day, take a short boat excursion on<br />
the lake, then visit the Wenwu Temple and the<br />
Tse-en Pagoda. (B)<br />
Day 6: Alishan<br />
Drive to the Alishan Forest Park, one of the<br />
most spectacular mountainous regions of<br />
Taiwan. Afternoon walking tour of the park.<br />

Day 7: Tainan • Fo Guang Shan monastery<br />
Optional early morning ride on the Alishan<br />
Forest Railway to see the sunrise (weather<br />
permitting) from the summit of Mount<br />
Alishan. After breakfast, drive to the charming<br />
mountain township of Zhuqi, and take a stroll<br />
down historic Fenchihu Old Street. Continue to<br />
Tainan to visit Fort Anping and historic Yanping<br />
