These magnificent temples are protected
within the Angkor Archaeological Park,
just a 20-minute drive from Siem Reap.
The monuments belong to the classic period
of Khmer art and civilisation. They were
created by a succession of Khmer kings who
presided over an empire that dominated
the region from 800AD to 1430AD, reaching
its peak in the 12th century. From the
15th century the temples were abandoned
and forgotten; the French naturalist Henri
Mouhot is attributed with their rediscovery
in 1861.

Highlights include the walled and moated
royal city of Angkor Thom, the giant stone
faces of Bayon and the huge three-tiered
pyramid of Angkor Wat. At least two full days
are recommended to get the most from the
site, allowing time to visit some of the outer
temples such as Preah Khan, Neak Pean,
Prasat Kravan or Pre Rup.

The former royal capital of Luang Prabang is
considered to be the best-preserved historic
town in South-East Asia, with a UNESCOprotected
old town district that encompasses
a distinctive combination of Buddhist temples,
French colonial architecture and historic
Laotian buildings. The town has a beautiful
setting, founded on a peninsula formed by the
Mekong and the Nam Khan rivers against a
backdrop of verdant mountains.
With numerous quiet temples to visit and back
streets to wander, the town rewards a leisurely
stay, but the National Palace Museum, and Wat
Mai, the city’s largest temple, are the highlights.

The ancient Vietnamese town of Hoi An is
located 30km south of Danang on the banks
of the Thu Bon River. Occupied by many
early western traders, Hoi An was one of the
major trading centres of South-East Asia in
the 16th century. This laid-back town has a
distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tileroofed
houses and narrow streets; the original
structure of some of these streets remains
almost intact.
Hoi An is known for being a culinary hotspot
and is an excellent place to learn about
Vietnamese cuisine. Speak to one of our Far

A cruise is a comfortable way to explore farflung
reaches of the Mekong River and its
delta. Shore excursions take you to areas
otherwise inaccessible, including small
riverside communities, enabling you to
discover the daily life of people living along
this great river. Most cruises operate on
seven-night itineraries between Vietnam and
Cambodia, while three- and four-night cruises
between Laos and Thailand are also available.
Excursions are escorted by local guides who
can share their knowledge about life on the
river. Vessels stop at riverside villages, which
often specialise in a particular trade or craft
such as pottery, silk weaving or fish farming.
