Zimbabwe’s history, culture and wildlife, not
to mention the magnificent Victoria Falls,

the west lies Hwange National Park, home
to one of the largest concentrations of
elephants in Africa. Lake Kariba, the world’s
biggest human-made lake, offers great
fishing and birding. History enthusiasts can
also marvel at Zimbabwe’s medieval-era
ruins, such as the city of Great Zimbabwe.

Neighbouring Botswana boasts a high
diversity of ecosystems, the most notable
being the UNESCO-listed Okavango Delta.

Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls forms the largest falling sheet
of water in the world. Every minute, up to
half a million tonnes of the Zambezi River
tumbles down into the deep gorges beneath.
Locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning ‘The
Smoke That Thunders’, the falls form part of
the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe,
with the Zimbabwean side generally
providing better views from its network of
rainforest trails. For those seeking a different
vantage point, Victoria Falls offers unique
viewing experiences, from sunset cruises to
exhilarating light-aircraft flyovers. Victoria Falls’
historic on-site town is a must, thanks to its
vibrant community and friendly service.
Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest
wildlife reserve, containing vast tracts of
Kalahari sandveld where teak and mopane
woodlands are interspersed with salt pans
and grassy plains. Wildlife here is prolific and
population densities rank among the highest
in Africa. There are more than 100 mammal
species, including up to 30,000 elephants and
the endangered African wild dog – the Painted
Dog Conservation Project here has a visitor
centre and trail system that are well worth a
visit. Birding in Hwange is also excellent, with
the wet season (December to March) providing
excellent opportunities to see some of the 400
recorded species.
