Romania
Burgher houses of Sighisoara • Painted
monasteries of Gura Humorului
Many people associate Romania with
Transylvania and the legend of Dracula, but the
country offers a wealth of other attractions.
The capital, Bucharest, is known for its wide,
tree-lined boulevards and belle époque
buildings. The town of Sighisoara is the most
enchanting in Transylvania with its medieval
buildings, gilded roofs and twisted clock tower.
Danube Delta, Romania
UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve • Superb
birdwatching
Sighisoara, Romania
To the north, Southern Bucovina’s painted
monasteries are undoubtedly among the
greatest artistic monuments of Europe, dating
back to the 15th century. Although some of the
frescoes have been damaged by centuries of rain
and wind, most of the vivid colours have been
well preserved. The town of Gura Humorului is
an ideal base for exploring the region.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, the
Danube Delta is where the 2,800-kilometrelong
Danube River flows into the Black Sea.
Due to its lack of tides and relatively low
depths of water, the area has turned into the
world’s third largest biosphere with over 1,000
species of plants, 3,600 species of animals
and 360 species of birds, which migrate here
from Europe, Asia and Africa. The delta is also
renowned for pelican watching.
The best way to view the wealth of flora and
fauna is by small river craft, which allows for
easy access. Depending upon your particular
interests, the average stay is between two to
three days, staying in the villages of Uzlina,
Murighiol or Beștepe.
