I am sure that every football fan
has, at some point in their journey,
felt that searing pang of
loneliness, boredom and futility that is the
depths of the beautiful game. The point
when you genuinely wonder why you are
bothering being there and why you have
spent so much of your time and money to
actually do it.
When I say ‘everyone’ it has to be said
that I have a tad less sympathy for Man
Utd fans, Liverpool supporters and the
legion of Premier League fans that see a
couple of years without a trophy or getting
knocked out of European competition in
the quarter finals as being the end of the
world, but I suppose that it’s all relative to
the situation.
When I was growing up it was Leeds or
Liverpool who always seemed to be there
or thereabouts every season. Occasionally
another side would have a crack, such as
Man U or Arsenal, and then Forest and

Ipswich came along under Clough and
Robson respectively, but as of today, it
was generally the same faces at the party.
That’s where my annoyance of Liverpool
as a teen was born from. They had players
who were, without a doubt, the best
