The loneliness of the long-distance crisp packet...<br />

I am sure that every football fan<br />

has, at some point in their journey,<br />

felt that searing pang of<br />

loneliness, boredom and futility that is the<br />

depths of the beautiful game. The point<br />

when you genuinely wonder why you are<br />

bothering being there and why you have<br />

spent so much of your time and money to<br />

actually do it.<br />

When I say ‘everyone’ it has to be said<br />

that I have a tad less sympathy for Man<br />

Utd fans, Liverpool supporters and the<br />

legion of Premier League fans that see a<br />

couple of years without a trophy or getting<br />

knocked out of European competition in<br />

the quarter finals as being the end of the<br />

world, but I suppose that it’s all relative to<br />

the situation.<br />

When I was growing up it was Leeds or<br />

Liverpool who always seemed to be there<br />

or thereabouts every season. Occasionally<br />

another side would have a crack, such as<br />

Man U or Arsenal, and then Forest and<br />

▲ Happier times for Reg Brealey and Dave Bassett<br />

Ipswich came along under Clough and<br />

Robson respectively, but as of today, it<br />

was generally the same faces at the party.<br />

That’s where my annoyance of Liverpool<br />

as a teen was born from. They had players<br />

who were, without a doubt, the best<br />
