Since the last home game against Blackburn, United had
rallied to preserve Premier League status for another year.
The Blades took the lead in the Sheffield derby against
Wednesday through Brian Deane before Paul Warhurst
earned Wednesday a point.
United then took on Nottingham Forest in a huge relegation
six-pointer in Brian Clough’s final home game in charge, with
goals from Glyn Hodges and Brian Gayle earning a 2-0 win.
Another impressive away win followed as goals from Hodges and
Carl Bradshaw recorded a 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park.
This meant survival was secured (barring a mathematical miracle), so the pressure
was off for the final game as United beat Chelsea 4-2 with goals from Andy Scott, Paul
Rogers and Dane Whitehouse (2). United ended the season in 14th position.
