FRED ELSE<br />

England B international<br />

goalkeeper Fred Else<br />

was an important figure<br />

as <strong>Preston</strong> were League<br />

Championship runnersup<br />

in 1957-58. Previously<br />

with Axwell Park CW, he<br />

turned professional at<br />

Deepdale in August 1953<br />

and was ever-present<br />

on three occasions<br />

including 1956-57 when<br />

<strong>Preston</strong> finished third<br />

in the top-flight. He<br />

made 215 First Division<br />

appearances prior to<br />

joining Blackburn Rovers<br />

in August 1961. Helping<br />

them reach the League<br />

Cup semi-finals in 1961-<br />

62, he was ever-present<br />

in 1963-64 and moved to<br />

Barrow in July 1966. He<br />

starred in their 1966-67<br />

promotion success and<br />

became a maths teacher<br />

in Barrow where he died<br />

in July 2015.<br />

LES DAGGER<br />

Winger Les Dagger<br />

helped <strong>Preston</strong> finish<br />

League Championship<br />

runners-up in 1957-<br />

58. Starting with West<br />

Auckland, he joined<br />

<strong>Preston</strong> in May 1956 and<br />

made his First Division<br />

debut in their 6-0 victory<br />

at home to Sunderland<br />

six months later. He<br />

featured prominently<br />

as <strong>North</strong> <strong>End</strong> reached<br />

the FA Cup sixth round<br />

in 1959-60 and netted<br />

eight goals in 61 League<br />

outings before moving<br />

to Carlisle <strong>United</strong> in June<br />

1961. Ever-present as they<br />

won promotion in 1961-<br />

62, he later played for<br />

Southport. He worked as<br />

a painter and decorator,<br />

then for Lancashire<br />

County Council, helping<br />

teach handicapped adults<br />

and children. He died in<br />

<strong>Preston</strong> in March 2011.<br />

GORDON MILNE<br />

Right-half Gordon Milne<br />

gained 14 England caps<br />

after leaving <strong>Preston</strong>. The<br />

son of former <strong>Preston</strong><br />

manager Jimmy Milne, he<br />

played for Morecambe<br />

prior to joining <strong>Preston</strong> in<br />

January 1956. He netted<br />

three goals in 81 League<br />

games for his hometown<br />

club, moving to Liverpool<br />

in September 1960.<br />

Helping twice win the<br />

League Championship,<br />

he also appeared in the<br />

1966 ECWC final and<br />

joined Blackpool in May<br />

1967. He became Wigan<br />

Athletic’s player-boss<br />

in January 1970, then<br />

managed England Youth,<br />

Coventry City, Leicester<br />

City, Besiktas, Nagoya<br />

Grampus Eight, Bursaspor<br />

and Trabzonspor before<br />

appointed Newcastle<br />

<strong>United</strong>’s director<br />

of football.
