Party time after the final game of the season against Chelsea<br />

I remember really from the Forest<br />

game was obviously all the attention<br />

surrounding Brian Clough because<br />

it was his last home game. The other<br />

memorable moment for me was it was<br />

my outswinging corner which Gayley<br />

(Brian Gayle) met for the second<br />

goal into the far corner which really<br />

sealed the win.<br />

“We were playing well at this time,<br />

and it came at a good time really<br />

because we were up against it. After<br />

the game, I was stuck for about three<br />

hours because I was picked for the<br />

drug testing, but I couldn’t go to the<br />

toilet! I couldn’t go because it was so<br />

hot, I was totally dehydrated! Luckily,<br />

my missus was at the game, so I had a<br />

lift home! It was a big game, and a big<br />

three points.<br />

“I have to say because Brian Clough<br />

was the man he was, and he was<br />

ending on a down really by getting<br />

relegated, that was quite sad. Don’t<br />

get me wrong, I was over the moon at<br />

winning, that was a must, but it was a<br />

bit subdued I have to say because of<br />

what happened to Cloughie.”<br />

<strong>United</strong>’s victory over Everton<br />

was arguably just as impressive, as<br />

Bassett’s side maintained a notable<br />

record at Goodison which had seen the<br />

Blades win on Merseyside for a third<br />

year in a row.<br />

Charlie added: “Beating Everton 2-0<br />

at Goodison Park which was another<br />

huge away win at the time. Those two<br />

results basically ensured we stayed<br />

up, so avoiding a very nervy finish on<br />

the last game.<br />

“Thankfully, it didn’t go to the wire. It<br />

was a great result at Everton, that was<br />

another game I remember really well<br />

because I had to have three stitches<br />

in my head after a clash with Peter<br />

Beardsley! He elbowed me in the back<br />

of the head. That was nice to get the<br />

win there, I should have scored actually<br />

because Corky put me clean through,<br />

but I knocked it wide.<br />

“It was big season for me. Getting<br />

into the team was good for me, I<br />

knuckled down and enjoyed a good<br />

run in the side. Injuries followed in the<br />

next season, but at that time I really<br />

improved, and I look back fondly on the<br />

experience.”<br />
