I remember really from the Forest
game was obviously all the attention
surrounding Brian Clough because
it was his last home game. The other
memorable moment for me was it was
my outswinging corner which Gayley
(Brian Gayle) met for the second
goal into the far corner which really
sealed the win.
“We were playing well at this time,
and it came at a good time really
because we were up against it. After
the game, I was stuck for about three
hours because I was picked for the
drug testing, but I couldn’t go to the
toilet! I couldn’t go because it was so
hot, I was totally dehydrated! Luckily,
my missus was at the game, so I had a
lift home! It was a big game, and a big
three points.
“I have to say because Brian Clough
was the man he was, and he was
ending on a down really by getting
relegated, that was quite sad. Don’t
get me wrong, I was over the moon at
winning, that was a must, but it was a
bit subdued I have to say because of
what happened to Cloughie.”
United’s victory over Everton
was arguably just as impressive, as
Bassett’s side maintained a notable
record at Goodison which had seen the
Blades win on Merseyside for a third
year in a row.
Charlie added: “Beating Everton 2-0
at Goodison Park which was another
huge away win at the time. Those two
results basically ensured we stayed
up, so avoiding a very nervy finish on
the last game.
“Thankfully, it didn’t go to the wire. It
was a great result at Everton, that was
another game I remember really well
because I had to have three stitches
in my head after a clash with Peter
Beardsley! He elbowed me in the back
of the head. That was nice to get the
win there, I should have scored actually
because Corky put me clean through,
but I knocked it wide.
“It was big season for me. Getting
into the team was good for me, I
knuckled down and enjoyed a good
run in the side. Injuries followed in the
next season, but at that time I really
improved, and I look back fondly on the
experience.”
