Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (COIE)
mindset. This vision is fully aligned with the
College’s Strategic and Academic Plans,
including its institutional pillars of Enrolment,
Employment, and Empowerment
(the three Es) and Wildly Important
Goals. The new model includes five
tracks tailored to every level of interest in
entrepreneurial skills—from early explorers
to growing businesses—and is applicable
to both commercial and impact/social
entrepreneurship, as well as provides
opportunities for work-integrated learning.

A new vision and model for
entrepreneurial education
With a mandate in 2021 from Jonathan
Hack—Dean of Applied Research, Innovation,
and Entrepreneurship—the new team at the
Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
(COIE) led by Lalit Guglani orchestrated a
complete transformation of their programming
model and implemented a suite of costefficient,
exponentially expanded programming
from the ground up with multiple channels
of engagement leveraging contemporary
ecosystem resources.

receive a holistic development of future skills.
Within six months, the Centre of Innovation
and Entrepreneurship had successfully
implemented their renewed vision of
educating, inspiring, and empowering
students and the community through the

A comprehensive and holistic approach to
innovation in learning
The leading-edge methodologies used in
COIE programs include flipped classroom,
experiential, and team-based learning; iterative
experimentation using integration of Design
Thinking, Lean and Agile approaches based on
sustainability; and programming supported by
in-house experts, external presenters, mentors,
and leaders—all while leveraging curated
open resources. There is also a deeplyintegrated
focus on sustainability and the 17
UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
which serve as the foundation for COIE’s
Sustainability Innovation Institute and SDG
Innovation Lab, founded in 2020. A mindset
for sustainability is increasingly recognized
as integral to entrepreneurship, which COIE
directly weaves into its programs. Future topics
include advances in sustainable technologies,
an ecological worldview, startups in the ESG
economy and sustainable finance.
To engage further audiences such as industry
and policymakers, the Sustainability Innovation
Institute also holds leadership forums,
roundtables, and retreats.
Every year, Early Explorers attend over 80
workshops and speaker series covering a
wide range of topics. Aspiring and Budding
entrepreneurs participate in COIE’s flagship
experiential programs such as their
semi-annual two-and-a-half-day
Global Goals Jam Canada Weekend
Challenges and 10-week Incubation
Their primary objective was to advance
entrepreneurial education using the latest
methodologies and foster the mindset, skillset,
and competence required to start and manage
new ventures, address sustainability, and lead
a successful, productive life. Their quest led to
a comprehensive approach encompassing the
best of teaching and learning models.
