Granholm Signs Driver’s License Law A bill that allows legal immigrants temporarily living in Michigan to resume getting driver’s licenses was signed on February 15 by Governor Jennifer Granholm. The legislation amends the Michigan Vehicle Code to address concerns raised by Michigan businesses and foreign governments regarding an opinion issued by state Attorney General Mike Cox on December 27, 2007. Cox had determined that only permanent residents may obtain a driver’s license in Michigan and that individuals living here legally, but on a temporary basis, must be denied a license. That opinion led to a decision by the secretary of state to require firsttime applicants for a Michigan driver’s license to prove they have established a permanent legal residence in Michigan. Nawal McKay has received a 2008 Friend of Diversity Award from Walled Lake Consolidated Schools. She is an English Language Learner para-educator at Maple Elementary. The award was presented at the school district’s ninth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in January. Carol Loussia has started a new business. She has begun selling Gold Canyon items, which include scented candles, body and home products.
