offers a unique set of holds, shapes, and movements, ranging from larger holds and simpler routes to more technical and challenging climbs as you progress through the grades. Bouldering is not only a physical activity but also a mental one. It requires problemsolving skills as you figure out the best way to solve a boulder problem, or figure out how to get to the top. And the best part is, you get to do all of this while hanging out with friends and enjoying a full-body workout. We change a section of our routes on a weekly basis to keep things fresh and exciting. But what truly sets Northern Rocks apart is our incredible community. Everyone here is friendly, welcoming, and inclusive. We cheer each other on and celebrate achievements at every level. We take pride in creating a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable. We also place a strong emphasis on empowering girls and women in the climbing gym. Many of our staff members are women who can assist you on the wall. We have regular Boulder Women meetup groups where you can join, regardless of whether you're a first-time climber or experienced. You'll receive free coaching and will have the opportunity to connect with other women who share your passion. We also offer a fully funded girls climbing program for young women in years 9-13. This program aims to promote physical activity and help girls discover the joy of bouldering. There are free yoga classes for members, a fitness gym area, after school youth programs, social competitions and events, pro shop, coffee, and more. The staff will give you a free facility induction and after your first visit you get a free week of climbing to try it out. What were the challenges? Starting a business from scratch is never easy, and I faced several challenges along the way. One of the major obstacles I encountered was the struggle to be taken seriously as a young woman venturing into a niche market. It was challenging to secure investment and funding when I had limited resources and no track record to showcase. It took about five years of intensive research and development before I finally met my current business partner, John, who shared my enthusiasm for the idea and committed to investing in the business. Together, we embarked on a two-year journey to establish a custom-built full-scale facility but to cut a long story short, we had to pull the plug at the last minute. We managed to save the project by finding a building that would suit a bouldering-only facility. Once Northern Rocks opened, it was a matter of building up our programs, events, route setting, staff team, and infrastructure. However, we faced another significant challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, resulting in multiple months of lockdowns and uncertainty. It was a difficult time for any business, but we managed to persevere and make it through to the other side. Over the past year, we have been focused on rebuilding and emphasizing what sets Northern Rocks apart. We are incredibly grateful for our amazing community and everyone who contributes to making the gym come alive. It is the people who truly make Northern Rocks the special place it is. Despite the challenges and setbacks, I believe that each obstacle we faced has only made us stronger and more resilient. I am proud of how far we have come and remain committed to the ongoing success and growth of Northern Rocks. What's the most rewarding aspect? The most rewarding aspect is undoubtedly the people. It is amazing to see new climbers and members experience the excitement and sense of accomplishment when they conquer a challenging move or reach the top of a difficult project. Seeing people form new friendships, engaging in conversations, and cheering each other on during their climbing attempts creates a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. Another fulfilling aspect is coaching our youth programs and witnessing the growth and development of young climbers. It is incredibly rewarding to be a part of their journey, along with our dedicated coaching team, as they develop their skills and confidence in climbing. It has been amazing to see our youth & girls climbing program thrive and grow in popularity. The thriving community that emerges during social competitions, such as the annual Boulder Bash and the National Indoor Boulder Series, is a testament to the positive and inclusive environment we strive to cultivate. It’s awesome to see the interest and enthusiasm among climbers to venture into outdoor bouldering, as demonstrated by their participation in our outdoor trips to local crags. In 2020 climbing entered the arena of the Olympics, how has that effected climbing in NZ? The Olympic inclusion has given the sport of climbing more visibility in the public eye, in mainstream media and general awareness. Although passionate climbers will follow the climbing/bouldering world cup series anyway, having the Olympic inclusion reaches a wider audience. For some young people having that Olympic dream is really important and they can now aim
