Jan Sutherland, hard at work on her "other" job Loyalty is a rare commodity With the publication of Adventure issue 100, I took over as the editor and within a few issues we had purchased the publication. That was over 137 issues ago, 6 issues per year, so that makes 22 years of bringing Adventure to the masses. When we purchased Adventure, it came with a lot of history, goodwill, some back issues, a limited database and a salesperson, Jan Sutherland. Now Jan was not actually purchased with the publication, she wasn’t attached, but she eventually proved to be the biggest asset. Jan continued for a number of years as the advertising salesperson, and from there, she moved into the role of accounts, sending out invoices and more importantly, chasing them up. She also started her own business photographing horses but kept working with Adventure. Now, some 22 years later, she has decided to call it quits. She has explained to the next accounts person what needs to be done, how to use the database, send out accounts, and send reminders but that is not the loss. When you have had one person working with you for so long, you become reliant on their loyalty. Jan’s dedication to Adventure Magazine was second to none; that money coming in may well have been hers because she was more dedicated to making sure everything was paid in full than we were. She knew everyone, their quirks, their qualities, and their ongoing mistakes. She was meticulous with addresses and phone numbers and often I would call and ask ‘do you have an address for so and so from 1998?’ and moments later, it would arrive. We live in a transient world, what is popular today is old news tomorrow, what is socially trending now will be forgotten in a week. But like Adventure, Jan has been around for a while, she has stood the test of time, and nothing beats history, it is the one commodity you can’t buy or trade. History is the one reference that is always the best indicator of ‘good’, whether that is a person, a magazine or a product. So, as we say goodbye to Jan Sutherland, we will miss her; her ability, her enthusiasm and most of all her loyalty, and as we head to a new phase of adventure it is always good to be thankful and aware of those that have gone before you. Thanks, Jan! Adventure, 50 years of reaching the Adventure people of New Zealand. Thanks for the loyalty Jan, valued Adventure team member for over three decades!
