MITOCHONDRIA
PART 2
Martin Lewis
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 22
MITOCHONDRIA - THE ESSENCE OF
CHRONIC FATIGUE
What are our mitochondria? Well, if you have read
Alchemical Voice Issue 17, you might recall that in
that article they were described as the ‘powerhouse of
the cell’. Fatigue is fundamentally an imbalance
between energy supply and energy demand. If you
have chronically low energy levels, then your cells are
not getting the energy supply they need. If the
demands on your energy are too high this creates an
energy deficit, which results in the symptom of
fatigue.
While there are many contributing factors to this
energy deficit, the single most important thing to
understand is that, in physical terms, the fatigue issue
centres around your mitochondria.
Within almost every cell of our body, we have
between 500 to 2,000 mitochondria whose job is to
literally make the energy your cells need to work. The
more mitochondria we have, the more energy can be
produced. As we age more mitochondria are lost than
are replaced, hence the older we are the less energy
we have. Also, when we get stressed our mitochondria
need more nutrients to produce the energy that we
need.
Mitochondria take the oxygen we breathe and the
food we eat (primarily carbs and fats) to create
adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel used to power
all cellular and metabolic processes. Without oxygen
and nutrients you will fade VERY fast ….. and without
mitochondria, your cells will not have the ability to
create the energy they need to function, meaning no
process in the body can happen the way it was
designed.
