Thewalkway was originally
openedtothe public in 1979,
but over the years had fallen
into disrepair. It needed work
to bothrejuvenate andextend
the track.
Near Opukehot pools, the
pathwayhad become severely
overgrown with branchesfrom
nearby trees, reaching down
very closetothe ground,posing
apotentialhazard.The council
stepped in to trim the branches
back to eyelevel while Lions
memberscompletedthe spruce
eliminate any overhanging
branches and tidied up the
area. Theyhave also replaced
New licence
for overseas
anglers
Complaints of overcrowding of
anglers on rivers has led to
overseas anglers having to pay
for special fishing licences.
This freshwater fishing
season, which begins October 1,
marks the introduction of the
new licence, aimed at
protecting New Zealand’s more
fragile fisheries, often located
in the backcountry.
The Designated Waters
Licence will apply to less than
two per cent of rivers mostly in
the South Island, none of which
are in Mid Canterbury.
Fish &Game NZ chief
executive Corina Jordan said
the new management tool
would help Fish &Game
manage angling pressure by
spreading angling effort
around.
Over the past 10 years, Fish &
Game had received increasing
complaints from resident and
nonresident anglers regarding
overcrowding in asmall
number of fisheries.
The cost of the new licence is
$40 per day for nonresidents,
who are restricted to five days
maximum for each designated
water region.
‘‘We really appreciate and
value overseas anglers, the
contribution they make to the
economy, as well as our
organisation through
purchasing licences, which
helps us protect waterways,’’
she said.
