On Monday morning, the Geraldine Health
Hub project passed anotablemilestone as the
former Geraldine Town and CountryClub site
was handed over tocontractors Thompson
Construction and Engineering for demolition
of the existing buildings. Asmall ceremony
was held at 8am at which the Rev Hugh
McCafferty and Whaea Adelaide Couch-Snow
led karakia and blessings.
GeraldineDistrict Foundation Chair James
(Jimmy) Wallace says, Its agreat day. This
project has taken along time toget to this
stage. At its instigation four years ago, the
projects budget was two million dollars; now
its five million. The price ofsteel alone has
increased by30per cent. He says that the
project was too big to finance with sausage
sizzles, and is grateful to the number of
trusts that have offered support. When we
approached the Community Trust Mid and
South Canterbury for help, we were surprised
anddelightedthatthey cameonboard as equal
partners.
Anumber of changeshave been made to the
plans to accommodate future tenants of the
medical centre.Jimmysays they had to orient
the building and plan the landscaping to
accommodate cultural issues concerning the
proximity of Geraldine FuneralServices.
Wayne ODonnell says that the sitehas been
used for many purposes, and he hopes the
centre will revive the southern end of town.
He says that as the building was to be
demolished, the trustees of the Geraldine
District Foundation were uncomfortable that
perfectly good reusable items that could
be repurposed and reused were about to
becomelandfill.
Wayne says, We spoke with community
groups to see if they would be interested in
removing reusable items from the site to
repurpose within clubsand groups throughout
Geraldine. The Geraldine Mens Shed,
Geraldine District Golf Club, Geraldine
Vintage Car and Machinery Club and the
Geraldine Academy of Performance and Arts
were among those who tookupthe offer.
These gifts of items for repurposing
also fulfil the ethos of the Geraldine
District Foundation to benefit the Geraldine
Community.
The Geraldine Town and Country Club sign
has been rehomed at the Geraldine Vintage Car
and Machinery Club, which will allow its
historical significance ofanearlier era to be
remembered.
