Health hub site blessed construction begins<br />

On Monday morning, the Geraldine Health<br />

Hub project passed anotablemilestone as the<br />

former Geraldine Town and CountryClub site<br />

was handed over tocontractors Thompson<br />

Construction and Engineering for demolition<br />

of the existing buildings. Asmall ceremony<br />

was held at 8am at which the Rev Hugh<br />

McCafferty and Whaea Adelaide Couch-Snow<br />

led karakia and blessings.<br />

GeraldineDistrict Foundation Chair James<br />

(Jimmy) Wallace says, Its agreat day. This<br />

project has taken along time toget to this<br />

stage. At its instigation four years ago, the<br />

projects budget was two million dollars; now<br />

its five million. The price ofsteel alone has<br />

increased by30per cent. He says that the<br />

project was too big to finance with sausage<br />

sizzles, and is grateful to the number of<br />

trusts that have offered support. When we<br />

approached the Community Trust Mid and<br />

South Canterbury for help, we were surprised<br />

anddelightedthatthey cameonboard as equal<br />

partners.<br />

Anumber of changeshave been made to the<br />

plans to accommodate future tenants of the<br />

medical centre.Jimmysays they had to orient<br />

the building and plan the landscaping to<br />

accommodate cultural issues concerning the<br />

proximity of Geraldine FuneralServices.<br />

Wayne ODonnell says that the sitehas been<br />

used for many purposes, and he hopes the<br />

centre will revive the southern end of town.<br />

He says that as the building was to be<br />

demolished, the trustees of the Geraldine<br />

District Foundation were uncomfortable that<br />

perfectly good reusable items that could<br />

be repurposed and reused were about to<br />

becomelandfill.<br />

Wayne says, We spoke with community<br />

groups to see if they would be interested in<br />

removing reusable items from the site to<br />

repurpose within clubsand groups throughout<br />

Geraldine. The Geraldine Mens Shed,<br />

Geraldine District Golf Club, Geraldine<br />

Vintage Car and Machinery Club and the<br />

Geraldine Academy of Performance and Arts<br />

were among those who tookupthe offer.<br />

These gifts of items for repurposing<br />

also fulfil the ethos of the Geraldine<br />

District Foundation to benefit the Geraldine<br />

Community.<br />

The Geraldine Town and Country Club sign<br />

has been rehomed at the Geraldine Vintage Car<br />

and Machinery Club, which will allow its<br />

historical significance ofanearlier era to be<br />

remembered.<br />
