Connecting people and celebrating the<br />

arrival of spring are the reasons behind<br />

Safe Families Network hosting its second<br />

Community Kaievent.<br />

It will be on September 1.<br />

Followingthe success of the inaugural<br />

Community KaieventinMarch,network<br />

co­ordinator Anna Arrowsmith said now<br />

was the righttime to holdanother one.<br />

‘‘We wanted to again offerthis to the<br />

community, it’s an opportunity to come<br />

together, talk,connect and enjoy some<br />

kai,’’ Arrowsmith said.<br />

Anzco are again supporting theevent by<br />

providing the meat for barbecue, with<br />

sausages, hamburgers and fruit on offer.<br />

The event offers the opportunity for the<br />

community to comealong grab something<br />

to eat, sit around the chessboard, andchat<br />

to the members of SafeFamilies Network.<br />

Members canprovide information about<br />

mental wellbeing, family harm and<br />

support for those needing it.<br />

For the successful March event, about<br />

200 people attended, with about150<br />

sausages and80hamburgers served.<br />

Arrowsmith said the network was aware<br />

many people includingmiddle income<br />

earners were doing it tough.<br />

‘‘With the stress of thecost of living, food<br />

prices going up, financial pressures and<br />

financial abuse. We decided to put on a<br />

free barbecue for anyone in the<br />

community whowould like to come<br />

along,’’ shesaid.<br />

Safe FamiliesNetworkismade up of 40<br />

members from MidCanterbury<br />

organisationswho meetregularly to discuss<br />

familyharm mattersinthe community.<br />

Organisations include Mid Canterbury<br />

Safe Families Network’s first Community Kai in March was asuccess.<br />

schools, St John,BirthrightCanterbury,<br />

Anglican Advocacy, Presbyterian Support,<br />

Oranga Tamariki ,TeWhatuOra,Aviva<br />

Families andFalePasifika.<br />

Thenetwork’s focus is oncreatingsafe<br />

families andreducing harm.<br />

‘‘We lookatthe risksinourcommunity,<br />

what arethe issues,whatsupport we can<br />

offer, whatwecanprovidetothe<br />

communityinthisarea and where arethe<br />

gapsare,’’Arrowsmithsaid.<br />

Recentwomen’swellnesstalkspresented<br />

bythenetworkwerepopular.<br />

‘‘Some peopleleftthe workshops<br />

decidingtomakebig changesin theirlives,<br />

it waslifechanging forsomewomen.’’<br />

Thenetworkalsobringsavariety of<br />

White Ribbonevents toMid Canterbury<br />

each year includingapopularquiz held in<br />

November.<br />
