ASHHUTT UNDER 15S WIN SECONDARY SCHOOL GIRLS RUGBY COMPETITION

Under15rugbysidehavewon
the 2023 Under 15s secondary
schoolgirls competition.
It was aMid and South
Canterbury school girls age
group competition.
The combinedAshburton and
MountHuttcolleges side beat
defendingchampions
Craighead37­19 at Pleasant
Point showgrounds last week in
whatwas described as ‘‘an
absolute cracker of agame’’.
The new side was under the
coaching directionofStirling
Clark and Jarrod Ross.
Under 15steammanager
Tania Hillsaid the girlsstarted
off the game the way they
wantedtofinish, in front of a
supportive crowd. They wonthe
Under15s cup, whichwill be
shared between both schools,
and each player got their own
championship medal.
‘‘They were pretty
determined.Itwas quite an
amazing game, they played
great,’’Hill said.
‘‘We had lots of supporters as
well, which Ithink helped.’’
‘‘It was agreat game and the
girls played their hearts out to
comehomewith the win.’’
AshHutt had beaten
Craighead in the previous
round of the competition, and
around six AshHutt players had
faced them in the competition
final last year.
‘‘We are so proudofthemand
how far they have come,’’ Hill
said, of thenew team; many of
whom hadnot played before.
‘‘A couple of them hadn’t
even held aball beforeand
didn’t even know how to throw a
pass.’’
‘‘They have come together as
ateam and are atight family
unit.’’
In theUnder 18 girlsbronze
finalthe Joe’s GarageFirst XV
AshHuttgirls side beat Timaru
Girls High School 24­22 at
Southern Rugby Club, in Hinds
last week.
They started the game with a
squadof15, and kept the
pressure on to secure third
overall in theSouth Canterbury
Secondary School Girls
competition.
TheUnder 18s competition
was won by Craighead who
overwhelmingly beat second
placedStKevin’s/Waitaki Girls
side 82­27atPleasant Point.
Suchwas the success of the
girls rugbyin Mid Canterbury
thisyear, four of the AshHutt
First XV players have been
named in the Hannan Shield
Under18squadthis month.
Angel Hauiti­Spooner, Edelma
Kelsall, Siasini Satui (all
Ashburton College) and
Savannah Clark (MountHutt)
will represent thedistrict in the
24­womensquad.

Area Committee
Hato Hone St John provides health
shuttles,youth programmes,caring
callers,pet outreach therapy, and
emergencyambulanceservices across
MidCanterbury. Helping supportthe
work of these paid and volunteer teams
is the MidCanterburyAreaCommittee.
Through communityengagementand
supporting communityhealth initiatives,
the members of the MidCanterburyArea
Committee areelectedand appointed
to the committee to representthe local
community.
TheMid Canterbury Area Committee is
made up of nine volunteer members.
Thecommittee is chaired by Michael Rushton,
whoseinvolvementwith Hato Hone St John
goes back to his time living in the Mayfield
area and chairing the then MayfieldStJohn
committee.
Twoyears ago,achange of Hato Hone
St John districtcommittee structurewas
introduced and the then three separate
districtcommittees –Mayfield,Methvenand
Ashburton–combined to form the nownew
MidCanterburyAreaCommittee
John Milne,Aroha Brett and BrentMurdoch are
all involved in the Mayfield area, with David
Mangin representing Methven. Joanne Wakelin
and Paul Thomas have been involved with
Hato HoneStJohn in Ashburtonfor anumber
of years,and recently Jane Tarbotton and
Geoffrey Barr have joined the committee.
Allmembers bring arange of differentskills
required to develop,manage and deliver
several communityhealth initiatives,property
maintenanceand managementofanamazing
number of volunteers in the community.
We areveryfortunate to be supportedby
TheTrevorWilson Charitable Trust and a
communitythatrecognises the role Hato
Hone St John plays in MidCanterburyand in
turncontributewith generous donations and
support.
TheAreaCommittee is looking forward
to the appointmentofthe Community
EngagementCoordinator, who will also assist
with the deliveryofour area committee health
initiatives.
