ASHHUTT UNDER 15S WIN SECONDARY SCHOOL GIRLS RUGBY COMPETITION<br />

Under15rugbysidehavewon<br />

the <strong>2023</strong> Under 15s secondary<br />

schoolgirls competition.<br />

It was aMid and South<br />

Canterbury school girls age<br />

group competition.<br />

The combined<strong>Ashburton</strong> and<br />

MountHuttcolleges side beat<br />

defendingchampions<br />

Craighead37­19 at Pleasant<br />

Point showgrounds last week in<br />

whatwas described as ‘‘an<br />

absolute cracker of agame’’.<br />

The new side was under the<br />

coaching directionofStirling<br />

Clark and Jarrod Ross.<br />

Under 15steammanager<br />

Tania Hillsaid the girlsstarted<br />

off the game the way they<br />

wantedtofinish, in front of a<br />

supportive crowd. They wonthe<br />

Under15s cup, whichwill be<br />

shared between both schools,<br />

and each player got their own<br />

championship medal.<br />

‘‘They were pretty<br />

determined.Itwas quite an<br />

amazing game, they played<br />

great,’’Hill said.<br />

‘‘We had lots of supporters as<br />

well, which Ithink helped.’’<br />

‘‘It was agreat game and the<br />

girls played their hearts out to<br />

comehomewith the win.’’<br />

AshHutt had beaten<br />

Craighead in the previous<br />

round of the competition, and<br />

around six AshHutt players had<br />

faced them in the competition<br />

final last year.<br />

‘‘We are so proudofthemand<br />

how far they have come,’’ Hill<br />

said, of thenew team; many of<br />

whom hadnot played before.<br />

‘‘A couple of them hadn’t<br />

even held aball beforeand<br />

didn’t even know how to throw a<br />

pass.’’<br />

‘‘They have come together as<br />

ateam and are atight family<br />

unit.’’<br />

In theUnder 18 girlsbronze<br />

finalthe Joe’s GarageFirst XV<br />

AshHuttgirls side beat Timaru<br />

Girls High School <strong>24</strong>­22 at<br />

Southern Rugby Club, in Hinds<br />

last week.<br />

They started the game with a<br />

squadof15, and kept the<br />

pressure on to secure third<br />

overall in theSouth Canterbury<br />

Secondary School Girls<br />

competition.<br />

TheUnder 18s competition<br />

was won by Craighead who<br />

overwhelmingly beat second<br />

placedStKevin’s/Waitaki Girls<br />

side 82­27atPleasant Point.<br />

Suchwas the success of the<br />

girls rugbyin Mid Canterbury<br />

thisyear, four of the AshHutt<br />

First XV players have been<br />

named in the Hannan Shield<br />

Under18squadthis month.<br />

Angel Hauiti­Spooner, Edelma<br />

Kelsall, Siasini Satui (all<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> College) and<br />

Savannah Clark (MountHutt)<br />

will represent thedistrict in the<br />

<strong>24</strong>­womensquad.<br />

Area Committee<br />

Hato Hone St John provides health<br />

shuttles,youth programmes,caring<br />

callers,pet outreach therapy, and<br />

emergencyambulanceservices across<br />

MidCanterbury. Helping supportthe<br />

work of these paid and volunteer teams<br />

is the MidCanterburyAreaCommittee.<br />

Through communityengagementand<br />

supporting communityhealth initiatives,<br />

the members of the MidCanterburyArea<br />

Committee areelectedand appointed<br />

to the committee to representthe local<br />

community.<br />

TheMid Canterbury Area Committee is<br />

made up of nine volunteer members.<br />

Thecommittee is chaired by Michael Rushton,<br />

whoseinvolvementwith Hato Hone St John<br />

goes back to his time living in the Mayfield<br />

area and chairing the then MayfieldStJohn<br />

committee.<br />

Twoyears ago,achange of Hato Hone<br />

St John districtcommittee structurewas<br />

introduced and the then three separate<br />

districtcommittees –Mayfield,Methvenand<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>–combined to form the nownew<br />

MidCanterburyAreaCommittee<br />

John Milne,Aroha Brett and BrentMurdoch are<br />

all involved in the Mayfield area, with David<br />

Mangin representing Methven. Joanne Wakelin<br />

and Paul Thomas have been involved with<br />

Hato HoneStJohn in <strong>Ashburton</strong>for anumber<br />

of years,and recently Jane Tarbotton and<br />

Geoffrey Barr have joined the committee.<br />

Allmembers bring arange of differentskills<br />

required to develop,manage and deliver<br />

several communityhealth initiatives,property<br />

maintenanceand managementofanamazing<br />

number of volunteers in the community.<br />

We areveryfortunate to be supportedby<br />

TheTrevorWilson Charitable Trust and a<br />

communitythatrecognises the role Hato<br />

Hone St John plays in MidCanterburyand in<br />

turncontributewith generous donations and<br />

support.<br />

TheAreaCommittee is looking forward<br />

to the appointmentofthe Community<br />

EngagementCoordinator, who will also assist<br />

with the deliveryofour area committee health<br />

initiatives.<br />

Coordinatorisfocused on establishing,<br />

building,and maintaining stakeholder<br />

relationships.<br />

Based in <strong>Ashburton</strong>, this is apermanent<br />

part-time role working 20 hours per week.<br />

Hato Hone St John provides opportunities<br />

forflexibilityinworking,aswellasmember<br />

benefits and the chancetoengage in ongoing<br />

professional and personal development.<br />

Youwill help the local team develop<br />

connections into the MidCanterbury<br />
