Using maths inthe real world:<br />
locals participate in Maths Week<br />
On Tuesday, 15 <strong>August</strong>, as part ofnational<br />
Maths Week, Geraldine Primary School<br />
invited several local parents to explain the use<br />
of maths in the real world to students. During<br />
the day, the entire school was transformed into<br />
ahands-on learning display.<br />
While the junior syndicate explored maths<br />
using water, sand and Lego to learn about<br />
capacity, logic and patterns, the middle and<br />
senior syndicates participated in the parentled<br />
presentations.<br />
Aaron Sheed, who loves a good<br />
whiteboard, explained to students, using<br />
groceries as props, how maths is used at<br />
FreshChoice. Aaron says, Its good for thekids<br />
to see me in adifferent light, and its agreat<br />
way to give back to the community.<br />
Beehives were brought along by Chad<br />
Tozer, who used his knowledge of beekeeping<br />
to explain the ratios of sugar to water used in<br />
feeding the bees. FonterrasTinaPirie brought<br />
bacteria in Petri dishes. She showed the<br />
children how to work out the average bacteria<br />
in the dish by using colonies.<br />
Timber boxing ishow local builder Aaron<br />
England showcased how maths is used in the<br />
building industry. Aaron says, Maths is my<br />
worst subject, but I wanted to show the<br />
children that the more you learn at school, the<br />
easier it makes it later on. Johnny Burnside<br />
wowed the students by bringing in his tractor<br />
with aseed drill attached. He demonstrated<br />
many examplesofthe involvement ofmathsin<br />
the farming industry.<br />
Principal Stu Wilcox says, Its agreat way<br />
to give our children the opportunity to see that<br />
maths is everywhere, and the connection and<br />
importance of maths in the world of work and<br />
practical aspects of everyday life.<br />
Other challenges posed during the week<br />
included: How many skips can Mr Wilcox do<br />
in one minute; if every child in the school<br />
stood side by side, how many metres long<br />
would the line be; and how many steps do you<br />
think Mr Campbell will do today?<br />

in 1998. It is apremier mathematics event in<br />
