322. Let us be silent as to each other's weakness ; helpful,<br />

tolerant, nay, tender, towards each other ! Oh, if we cannot<br />

feel tenderness, may we at least feel pity! May we put away<br />

from us the satire which scourges and the anger which brands<br />

the oil and wine of the good Samaritan are of more avail. We<br />

may make the ideal a reason for contempt; but it is more beautiful<br />

323. "It is wonderful what care some good people take to get<br />

all the pain and suffering they can out of an offence. A grain<br />

of sand blows into their eye, slips under their eyelid, and they<br />

have brushed it away and have done with it ; but, no ! the hasty,<br />

bitter word, the selfish act, of which a relative, a friend, an<br />

acquaintance, was guilty, they lay up in their memory; and<br />

many kindly things he has done, and the many kindly words he<br />

has said, they never think, but the one offence is always present<br />

324. D. L. Moody said : "They who say they will forgive,<br />

but cannot forget an injury, simply bury the hatchet, while<br />

they leave the handle out, ready for immediate use."<br />

325. Joseph Parker said : "The great man is always ready<br />

to find an excuse for the injury that is done him, if he possibly<br />

can."<br />

326. In Victor Hugo's story, "Les Miserables," a notable<br />

character, Jean Valjean, is convicted of stealing a loaf for his<br />

sister's hungry children. He was imprisoned for two years.<br />

He tried to escape, and his imprisonment was lengthened to<br />

nineteen years. Then, upon his release, he found all society<br />
