old bridge sign. Out from Pentecost rings this word : "Let my<br />

followers all form in line, close ranks, and move out to a world<br />

conquest, and keep step." That command of His will make a<br />

winning force so great as to shorten up the world's present<br />

calendars, and shorten up the world's pain, and lengthen out the<br />

new life that will come to untold numbers through Jesus. S. D.<br />

161. "Well, have you come to serve God?" asked a deacon<br />

of a Christian man as he entered the porch of the house of God.<br />

"No," he replied, "I have been serving God all the week; I come<br />

to worship Him."<br />

162. We need to-day an S. S. S. S.—a "Society for the<br />

Suppression of Superfluous Societies." The church, and the<br />

163. Dr. Lyman Beecher, upon being asked how he did so<br />

much in his church, answered : "Oh, I preach Sundays, and four<br />

hundred of my church-members preach every day." That is<br />

how he could do so much, and why his church was such a factor<br />

for good in Boston in his day.<br />

164. An old sea-captain was riding in the cars towards Philadelphia,<br />

and a young man sat down beside him. He said<br />

"Young man, where are you going?" "I am going to Philadelphia<br />

to live," replied the young man. "Have you letters of introduction?"<br />

asked the old captain. "Yes," said the young man, and<br />

he pulled some of them out. "Well," said the old sea-captain,<br />

"haven't you a church certificate?" "Oh, yes," replied the young<br />

man ;" I didn't suppose you would want to look at that." "Yes,"<br />

said the sea-captain, "I want to see that. As soon as you get to<br />

old sailor, and I have been up and down the world, and it's my<br />

rule, as soon as I get into port, to fasten my ship fore and aft<br />
