703. "There is an aged Christian in Dublin," writes Henry<br />

Varley, "with whom I have often spoken, who passed through<br />

the following eventful experience : 'Some years since,' he said,<br />

'1 was travelling on horseback in one of the country districts,<br />

when the sudden report of a pistol-shot reached me. I was<br />

satisfied that I had been aimed at, but nevertheless thankfully<br />

conscious that 1 had escaped. Hastening onwards, I reached my<br />

home in safety, and went into the house. It had been my<br />

custom for years to carry a small <strong>Bible</strong> in the breast-pocket of<br />

my coat. Takir.g it out on this occasion, judge my surprise at<br />

rinding a leaden bullet imbedded in the leaves. It had penetrated<br />

as far as the Gospel of John. Removing the buliet, and<br />

opening the book at the spot where it rested, my eye fell upon<br />

the words, "Holy Father, keep through thine own name those<br />

whom thou hast given me." ' "<br />

704. It is related that the celebrated Welsh preacher, Christmas<br />

Evans, was once discussing 'the potato question with<br />

his thrifty, diligent wife, and, perhaps in a playful, but<br />

still in a characteristic, way, said to her, "Catherine, you<br />

never mind the potatoes : your trust in Providence, and<br />

all will be well." "I'll tell you what we'll do, Christmas."<br />

replied Catherine, "you go and sit down on the top of Moelly<br />

Gest, waiting for Providence, and I'll go and hoe the<br />

potatoes; and we shall see to which of us Providence will<br />

come first."<br />

705. During more than fifty centuries man had fixed his gaze<br />

on the starry sky, observing the motions of the planets, and<br />

seeking to trace their laws, yet the law of harmony eluded the<br />

search of learned men ; the world, so far as they knew, performed<br />

eccentric circles, the object of which they could not<br />

comprehend. The universe was a confused mass, a la<strong>by</strong>rinth<br />

which baffled them. One day a man of genius said to himself,<br />

"The worlds must be considered with reference to the sun, and<br />
