754. "A workman of the great chemist Faraday one day<br />

knocked into a jar of acid a silver cup. It disappeared, was<br />

eaten up <strong>by</strong> the acid, and could not be found. The question came<br />

up whether it could ever be found. One said he could find it;<br />

another said it was held in solution, and it was impossible to find<br />

it. The great chemist came in, and put some chemical into the jar,<br />

and in a moment every particle of silver was precipitated to the<br />

bottom. He lifted it out a shapeless mass, sent it to the silversmith,<br />

and the cup was restored. If Faraday could restore that<br />

cup, I believe God can restore my sleeping and scattered dust."<br />

755. The Romans had a practice of lighting up their tombs.<br />

It is recorded that fifteen hundred years after the death of Tullia,<br />

Cicero's daughter, her tomb, which was accidentally opened, was<br />

found illuminated with a lamp. It was but a glimmering light,<br />

the rays of which were confined to the catacomb walls ; but the<br />

light which Christ sheds upon the grave falls upon the vista of<br />

eternity. You can now stoop, look in, and see immortality<br />

beyond. The grave which He entered was soon lit up with<br />

shining angels ; and now He is gone. Gone where ? To His<br />

Father and ours. He may be here, not twenty miles away, not<br />

twenty inches. "Lo, I am with you always." Faith peoples<br />

yonder churchyard with angels, and fills the air with songs.<br />

756. "Christ is risen !" This is the song we shout, earth and<br />

heaven in one, on Easter day; with this we part from our loved<br />

ones ; with this they answer us from the other land ; with this we<br />

lay us down to rest ; the echo of this we listen for from beyond<br />

the grave. There is, it is said, a beautiful custom in parts of<br />

Sicily when the fishermen are going on some expedition into<br />

the deep sea : their wives and children accompany them to the<br />

shore, and as they embark they raise all together their voices in<br />

a hymn of praise to God, and as they put out to sea those in<br />
