one daring man, against orders, went on deck, made the dangerous<br />

passage to the pilot-house, saw the steersman lashed fast<br />

to his post, holding the wheel unwaveringly, and inch <strong>by</strong> inch<br />

turning the ship once more to sea. The pilot saw the watcher<br />

and smiled. Then the daring passenger went below and gave<br />

out a note of cheer. "I have seen the face of the pilot, and he<br />

smiled. It is all well."<br />

121. Professor Drummond tells of a young girl whose character<br />

ripened into rare beauty. "One of the loveliest lives," he<br />

says, "that ever bloomed on earth." She always wore about her<br />

neck a little locket. But no one was allowed to open it, or to<br />

know what it contained. Once, in a time of dangerous illness,<br />

she permitted a friend to look within it, and there she saw the<br />

that as one starts on the narrow road that leads to life there<br />

is just room enough for two to walk side <strong>by</strong> side—Christ and<br />

the disciple; but as they go on, the road gets narrow, very<br />

narrow, until it is too narrow for two to walk side <strong>by</strong> side<br />

then self must go and Christ alone remain, and thus the disciple<br />

learns the deeper secret of Christ dwelling within. That is it<br />

Not Christ as a companion, but Christ as a life—our life and<br />

the life of the church.<br />
