manage? You can't speak plain, and yet you lead so many to<br />

Christ. How is it?' Said he: 'Doc.—Doctor, I give 'em the<br />

Bi-Bi-ble. That don't stutter.' That is it. Use the Word. In<br />

all our work use the Word. 'That don't stutter,' and will reach<br />

people, when stammering or eloquent language will fail."<br />

810. "In soul-saving, tact is necessary. A criminal under<br />

sentence of death was waiting the day of execution. A minister<br />

attended him. All efforts to lead him to repentance seemed<br />

unavailing. Going home, he met a man who was known all over<br />

the district for his life and good works. The conversation turned<br />

upon the criminal. The minister requested the elder to go and<br />

see him. He did so, and, sitting beside the criminal, he took his<br />

hand in his, and said, with much fervour and simplicity : 'Wasn't<br />

it great love in God to send His Son into the world to die for<br />

sinners like you and me?' In a moment, the fountain of the<br />

man's heart was broken up, and he wept bitter tears, and afterwards<br />

said : 'When the minister spoke to me, it seemed like one<br />

standing far above me, but when the good man came in and sat<br />

down <strong>by</strong> my side, and classed himself with me, and said,<br />

"Wasn't it great love in God to send His Son into the world to<br />

die for sinners like you and me?" I couldn't stand it any<br />

longer.'<br />

811. "An incident is related which occurred during Mr. Fin<br />

ney's meetings in New York City, and which will illustrate the<br />

value of a little tact in the great struggle for souls. The big<br />

cutlery firm of Sheffield, England, had a branch house in New<br />

York. The manager was a partner of the firm, and very worldly.<br />

One of his clerks, who had been converted in the meetings,<br />

invited his employer to attend. One evening he was there and<br />

sat across the aisle from Mr. Arthur Tappan. He appeared<br />

affected during the sermon, and Mr. Tappan kept his eye on<br />

him. After the dismissal, Mr. Tappan stepped quickly across<br />

the aisle, introduced himself, and invited him to stay to the<br />

after-service. The gentleman tried to excuse himself and get<br />

away, but Mr. Tappan caught hold of the button on his coat<br />

and said, 'Now, do stay: I know you will enjoy it!' and he was<br />

so kind and gentlemanly that the cutlery man could not well<br />

refuse. He stayed and was led to Christ. Afterwards he said:<br />
