cannot look out, even to know the glories of the fair world from<br />

which your soul excludes itself. There is no punishment equal<br />

to the punishment of being base. To sink from sin to sin, from<br />

infamy to infamy—that is the fearful retribution which is<br />

794. Dr. J. W. Chapman says that his old college president<br />

came to him one day and said : "I question if New York will<br />

795. Suppose a man should come to a table and there is a<br />

knife laid at his trencher, and it should be told him : "This is<br />

the knife that cut the throat of your child, or your father;" if<br />

he could now use that knife as any other knife, would not one<br />

say, "Surely there was but little love either to the father or to<br />

the child"? So, when there is a temptation to any sin, this is<br />

the knife that cut the throat of Christ, that pierced His side,<br />

that was the cause of His sufferings, that made Christ to be a<br />

curse. Now, wilt thou not look on that as a cursed thing that<br />

made Christ to be a curse? Oh, with what detestation would<br />

a man or woman fling away such a knife ! And with the like<br />

detestation it is required that a man should renounce sin : for<br />

that, and that only, was the cause of the death of Christ.<br />
