saves the lost. No other religion does this.<br />

Christianity is not only sublimely different from all other world<br />

religions because of the miracles it performs, but because of the<br />

desire it implants in the human soul for the reclamation of<br />

sinners. There is in every other religion either horror or contempt<br />

for the vile and dissolute. In Christianity there is nothing<br />

but compassion. Other religions wait for men to seek them,<br />

Christianity seeks men and dies directly it ceases to seek."<br />

808. In an address on soul-winning, C. R. Scoville gave the<br />

following illustrations : "An honourable man approached Dr.<br />

Lyman Beecher in his old age, and said, 'Doctor, you have lived<br />

a long time and have seen and known many things; what do<br />

you consider the main thing?' And the old veteran replied: 'It<br />

is not theology; it is not controversy; it is the saving of souls.'<br />

"The last sentence of the great evangelist, Knowles Shaw,<br />

was, 'Oh, it is glorious to rally souls to the cross.'<br />

"One conversation of Dean Hook, walking through the park<br />

arm in arm with a young man, saved Samuel Wilberforce, and<br />

liberated the slaves of the British Empire.<br />

" 'The longer I live,' said H. W. Beecher, 'the more confidence<br />

I have in those sermons where one man is the minister and one<br />

man is the congregation; where there is no question as to who<br />

is meant; where the preacher says, "Thou art the man;" the<br />

gospel, like sunshine, is scarcely noticed when it falls broadly,<br />

but concentrated on one spot, it soon burns.'<br />

"One has said : 'The church needs not more men, but man ;'<br />

Dr. Dixon says : 'The church evangelical is the church on ice<br />

and the church evangelistic is the church on fire.'<br />

"The Christian, like a telephone, must be a receiver and a<br />

transmitter. With ear open to the Infinite and life insulated<br />

from the world, he must transmit the glorious gospel of the<br />

Son of God to the unsaved millions. We are heirs of the ages,<br />

and also trustees of the future."<br />

809. "Tommy, the stutterer, could not speak a sentence plainly.<br />

He was nevertheless a successful soul-winner. During revival<br />

meetings you might see Tommy in the corner with his <strong>Bible</strong>,<br />

pointing some sinner to God, and soon the sinners would be<br />

rejoicing. One of the ministers said: 'Tommy, how do you<br />
