685. "A gentleman tells how he stood <strong>by</strong> the railroad and<br />

watched the postmaster hang out his bag to be caught <strong>by</strong> the<br />

mail express soon to pass. A few minutes later the train came<br />

thundering round the curve. The mail agent looked out of his<br />

car, and then, thrusting out an iron arm attached to the side of<br />

it, snatched the bag, and the train sped on its way. If the<br />

postmaster had been late, even a second late, he would have<br />

missed the mail. Be in time for salvation, for<br />

" 'Too late, too late, may be the cry;<br />

Jesus of Nazareth has passed <strong>by</strong>.' "<br />

686. "It is said that Richard Baxter saved up a thousand<br />

pounds which he purposed to devote to the work of God; but<br />

before the time came as he had purposed, the thousand pounds<br />

was lost in the investment in which he had placed it, and too<br />

late his eyes were opened to his mistake, and he ever afterwards<br />

deplored that he had not availed himself of the open doors of<br />

usefulness as they came to him day <strong>by</strong> day."<br />

687. "Not yet," said a little boy, as he was busy with his<br />

trap and ball. "When I grow older, I will think about my soul."<br />

The little boy grew to be a young man. "Not yet," said the<br />

young man. "I am now about to enter into trade. When I see<br />

my business prosper, then I shall have more time than now."<br />

Business did prosper. "Not yet," said the man of business.<br />

"My children must have my care. When they are settled in<br />

life, I shall better be able to attend to religion." He lived to<br />

be a grey-headed man. "Not yet," still he cried. "I shall soon<br />

retire from trade, and then I shall have nothing else to do but<br />

read and pray." And so he died. He put off to another time<br />

what should have been done when a child. He lived without<br />

God, and died without hope. Dr. Haven,<br />

688. J. Stuart Holden writes : "Some<br />

few years ago I was<br />

visiting the Niagara Falls. We descended into the 'Cave of the<br />

Winds,' where the great cataract sweeps past with a roar that<br />

is absolutely deafening. I remarked to the attendant what a<br />

den fining noise he had to spend his time in. His answer was:<br />

'I never hear the noise. When I first came, I thought I should<br />

never be able to bear it, but I have become so accustomed to the<br />
