■ Overview
Configuration options with SIMATIC PDM
SIMATIC PDM (Process Device Manager) is a universal, vendorindependent
tool for the configuration, parameterization, commissioning,
diagnosis and servicing of intelligent field devices
(sensors and actuators) and field components (remote I/Os,
multiplexers, control-room devices, compact controllers), which
in the following sections will be referred to simply as devices. Using
one software, SIMATIC PDM enables the processing of more
than 1,000 devices from Siemens and over 100 vendors worldwide
on one homogeneous user interface.
With respect to device integration, SIMATIC PDM is the most
powerful device manager available on the world market. Devices
which previously were not supported can be easily integrated
in SIMATIC PDM at any time by importing their device descriptions
(EDD). This provides security for your investment and
saves you investment costs, training expenses and consequential
costs.
Parameters and functions for all supported devices are displayed
in a consistent and uniform fashion independent of their
communications interface.
Introduction
Product Versions
SIMATIC PDM is available in two product versions:
as the SIMATIC PDM Package for SIMATIC PCS 7/S7, fully integrated
in the central engineering system of SIMATIC PCS 7
or in STEP 7, or
as the SIMATIC PDM Stand-alone, on a mobile computer (Microsoft
Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP Professional) on
PROFIBUS or with direct connection to the device.
Customer-oriented product structure
SIMATIC PDM is optimally adapted to the customer’s needs and
structured to enable the customer to put together his very own
product with the functionality actually required. Which product
components he selects depends on whether SIMATIC PDM is
operated in the SIMATIC PCS 7 context or in stand-alone mode.
Depending on the number of devices integrated in a project
or diagnosed in the lifelist, SIMATIC PDM is infinitely scalable
from 4 TAGs (stand-alone version) or 128 TAGs, through
128/512/1.024/2.048 TAGs, to an unlimited number of TAGs.
Every device (e.g. transmitter, positioner etc.) corresponds to
one TAG, and the number of TAGs within a project is monitored
by SIMATIC PDM.
