A Brief History of Sabattus St Roopers
The Sabattus Street Lewiston Roopers Beverage and Redemption
stands as a testament to the beloved Steve Roop's vision and
dedication. In 1992, Steve transformed a tiny 1,000 square feet space
that most had written off to being a shack, into the first Roopers
Redemption Center. When interviewed for the Roopers 30th Year
Anniversary Video, Steve recalls: “I had a nice building in Lewiston, I
thought ‘I think I’ll make a nice redempt out of it.”
The reality was that Steve possessed a vision that despite the initial
perception of an old, rundown building on Sabattus Street, he built
into a reality and he did it gracefully while serving the community and
helping those in need around him.
Stephanie St Laurent humorously reflects in the video, "We joke
around. I swear it was like a shack on Sabattus Street, and at the time,
I remember walking through, and the floors were kind of crooked.”
Still, Steve opened the redempt and he was doing Shaws pickups on
Saturdays and driving out to Bath and Brunswick, bringing back and
dropping off bottles, and then he did his rounds in Lewiston all in his
little box truck. At night he would count bottles and he worked
building the store that eventually would turn into the beloved
Roopers that we know today. To this day, Sabattus Street remains the
busiest store in the fleet with the most loyal customer base and an
exceptional staff who carries on Steve’s legacy on a daily basis.
