BIBA: CULT
FASHION
IT WAS A PHENOMENON THAT HAS NEVER BEEN
REPLICATED - A METEORIC RISE TO FAME AND A CRASHING
DEMISE – ALL IN A MATTER OF JUST 10 YEARS.
Gary Kelly
‘THE BIBA STORY: 1964-1975’ at
London’s Fashion and Textile Museum
throws an intriguing spotlight on a cult
fashion and lifestyle label that epitomised
that colourful transition from Flower
Power into Glam Rock. This is the only
exhibition ever to look at the history
of Biba, a company which brought
affordable, up-to-the-minute fashion to
the youth market, whilst simultaneously
instigating many of the retailing
innovations which are still with us today.
Under its legendary founder, Barbara
Hulanicki, Biba had a meteoric rise to
fame - from a mail order catalogue in
1963 to a seven-storey department store
on Kensington High Street. Biba went
on to become synonymous with Swinging
London, with its store attracting clientele
ranging from teenagers through to
celebrities including Twiggy, Mick Jagger,
Pattie Boyd, The Beatles and Cher. The
exhibition will chronicle Biba from its first
shop in 1964 to its demise in 1975.
