IONIAN ISLANDS, GREECE<br />

My favourite destination is the Ionian Islands.<br />

Specifically the smallest ones: Ithaka and its tiny<br />

neighbours, Meganisi and Paxi (also known as<br />

Paxos). These are regularly described to me by<br />

charter clients and captains as ‘heaven’. Blessed<br />

with natural beauty, crystal clear waters and<br />

lush greenery, they offer complete tranquillity<br />

and traditional Greek island charm. Unlike some<br />

of the larger Greek islands, they have somehow<br />

managed to preserve their authenticity and<br />

traditional way of life and have evaded the curse<br />

of mass tourism. There are picturesque villages<br />

to explore, charming and full of character. You’ll<br />

find idyllic beaches, rich cultural heritage and<br />

plenty of outdoor activities. The calm waters are<br />

ideal for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking.<br />

Plus, these islands are home to a surprising<br />

amount of wildlife. What’s not to love?<br />

THE COSQUER CAVE<br />

Located in the Calanque de<br />

Morgiou in Marseille, France, near Cap<br />

Morgiou. The entrance to the cave is<br />

located 37 m (121 ft) underwater. Nearly<br />

500 instances of cave art remain in quite<br />

remarkable condition which date back to<br />

18,000 years BC.<br />

BACKSTROKE BETTY<br />

1 Talk about being laid back, Backstroke<br />

Betty is all about lying back and taking<br />

things easy. Remember to look where<br />

you’re going and try not to hit anything<br />

head first.<br />

FREESTYLE FRANK<br />

2 Cool, sleek and fast, this stroke is<br />

the ultimate in style. Goggles on, it’s<br />

head down, arms churning overhead, feet<br />

kicking beneath and breathe. Don’t take<br />

things too seriously, loosen up and have<br />

some fun!<br />

DOGPADDLE DAVE<br />

3 Not everyone loves water and<br />

Dogpaddle is the most basic of survival<br />

strokes. It might not be fast or stylish but<br />

at least it will get you ashore. It might be<br />

better to stay out of the water if this is<br />

your stroke of choice!<br />

BREASTSTROKE BARBARA<br />

4 Admittedly it’s a stroke preferred by<br />

old ladies in flowery bathing caps, but slow<br />

and steady wins this race. Glide and kick<br />

in a most leisurely fashion and remember<br />

it’s not about speed, it’s looking good while<br />

you get there.<br />

BUTTERFLY BOB<br />

5 The most challenging of strokes with<br />

dual arm action and a dolphin kick. If<br />

you can master this, you’re winning any<br />

challenge but remember, it’s easy to look<br />

like you’re drowning. You don’t want an<br />

embarrassing rescue!<br />

FLOTATION FRED<br />

6 A non-swimmer, Fred can be found<br />

in any flotation device, from an inflatable<br />

swan to foam noodles, anything works<br />

as long as he manages to stay afloat.<br />
