trauma caused by mother. Starvation is a cause of piglets death <strong>in</strong> about 50% cases<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g the greatest on the first day after farrow<strong>in</strong>g. Approximately about 75% total<br />
mortality occurs <strong>in</strong> the first week of lactation. Physical factors such as suffocat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> the course of parturition, trauma, starvation and septicaemia are the most often<br />
causes <strong>in</strong> the first four days of the life of piglets. Viral and bacterial <strong>in</strong>fections are<br />
the causes of piglets mortality <strong>in</strong> later period of lactation.<br />
Behaviour of piglets dur<strong>in</strong>g nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Social hierarchy is be<strong>in</strong>g established by piglets immediately after their<br />
birth. The first pair of teats which produce more milk than other teats are sucked by<br />
the dom<strong>in</strong>ant piglets. They save their places dur<strong>in</strong>g suckl<strong>in</strong>g and behave<br />
agressively towards piglets who try to take over their places. Suckl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
several phases. First the sow makes grunt<strong>in</strong>g sounds by which it calls piglets to<br />
come and then they arrange themselves <strong>in</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong> way. In the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
piglets squeeze teats by their mouths, hit them by head, and then hold them tightly,<br />
draw<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong>to their mouths and mak<strong>in</strong>g vacuum. In this way milk reaches the<br />
cistern of mammary complex and piglets are start<strong>in</strong>g to suckle very rapidly<br />
(Šp<strong>in</strong>ka et al., 2002). At the expiration of one hour after previous suckl<strong>in</strong>g piglets<br />
wake up and <strong>in</strong>itiate suckl<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>. The sow lies down on its sides allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this<br />
way hungry piglets to suckle aga<strong>in</strong>. In order that suckl<strong>in</strong>g should be successfull the<br />
piglets <strong>in</strong>dicate to sow by their behaviour that they all are present and ready for<br />
suckl<strong>in</strong>g (Vuč<strong>in</strong>ić, 2006).<br />
Not every breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g is successful. Unsuccessful breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g is<br />
recognized by more <strong>in</strong>tensive sow grunt<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the entire time of breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
It is caused by non-releas<strong>in</strong>g of oxitoc<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> which case the milk may not reach<br />
mammary cistern. Permanent and <strong>in</strong>tensive sow grunt<strong>in</strong>g may <strong>in</strong>dicate the presence<br />
of pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> mammary gland or that the release of oxitoc<strong>in</strong> was omitted. In these<br />
cases the sow does not allow the access to piglets or she lies down on its abdom<strong>in</strong>al<br />
side. By ly<strong>in</strong>g on the stomach the sow is cool<strong>in</strong>g its mammary complex <strong>in</strong> case the<br />
acute <strong>in</strong>flammation has occurred there.<br />
Conclusion<br />
Behaviour of animals depends on: cognitive, neurophysiological, motor,<br />
motivation components and subjective feel<strong>in</strong>gs. In order that sows could express<br />
their natural behaviour it is necessary to provide them with quality diet <strong>in</strong> sufficient<br />
quantities, suitable space and protection aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>in</strong>fective and non-<strong>in</strong>fective<br />
diseases. If the environment is less restrictive the sows can express their natural<br />
