aforesaid on <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> January and July in every year hereafter, a<br />

statement or map or plan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workings <strong>of</strong> such <strong>coal</strong><br />

mine or colliery during <strong>the</strong> six months past up to date, to enable <strong>the</strong> in-<br />

spector to mark <strong>the</strong> same upon <strong>the</strong> map or plan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mine or col-<br />

liery furnished and deposited with said inspector as hereinbefore provided<br />

for, and when any <strong>coal</strong> mine or colliery is worked out preparatory to being<br />

abandoned, or when any local lift <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> is being finished with a view<br />

and for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> being abandoned, <strong>the</strong> owner or agent <strong>of</strong> such <strong>coal</strong><br />

mine or colliery shall have tlie map or plan <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> furnished as hereinbe-<br />

fore provided, or such portions <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> as <strong>the</strong> case may require, carefully<br />

verified, and notice shall be given to <strong>the</strong> inspector <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mines and col-<br />

lieries for <strong>the</strong> district, in writing, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose to abandon ;<br />

and in case<br />

<strong>the</strong> said owner or agent shall neglect or refuse to furnish <strong>the</strong> maps or plans<br />

by this section required, or any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, or shall knowingly or designedly<br />

cause such maps or plans when furnished to be incorrect or false, such<br />

owner or agent thus <strong>of</strong>fending shall be guilty <strong>of</strong> a misdemeanor, and upon<br />

conviction shall be punished by a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars<br />

or imprisonment not exceeding three months at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court."<br />

A supplement to an act, entitled "An act providing for tlie health and safety <strong>of</strong> persons<br />

employed in <strong>coal</strong> mines," api^roved <strong>the</strong> 3d day <strong>of</strong> March, A. D. 1870.<br />

Section 1. Be it enacted, &c., That inspectors <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mines and col-<br />

lieries, provided for in <strong>the</strong> fourteenth section <strong>of</strong> an act, entitled "An act<br />

providing for <strong>the</strong> health and safety <strong>of</strong> persons employed in <strong>coal</strong> mines,"<br />

approved <strong>the</strong> third day <strong>of</strong> March, Anno Domini one thousand eight hun-<br />

dred and seventy, shall, and may be appointed by a majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board<br />

<strong>of</strong> examiners, provided for in said act ; should said board <strong>of</strong> examiners<br />

disagree in <strong>the</strong>ir selection <strong>of</strong> inspector, <strong>the</strong> judges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> common<br />

pleas <strong>of</strong> said counties have <strong>the</strong> power to dissolve said board and appoint<br />

a new board <strong>of</strong> like qualification as aforesaid.<br />

Section 2. All laws or parts <strong>of</strong> laws inconsistent with this act, are hereby<br />

repealed.<br />

The Anemometer.—There are many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collieries still without this<br />

instrument, which tends to show how little interest is taken in <strong>the</strong> propei"<br />

ventilation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workings. Every colliery should have one for <strong>the</strong> ex-<br />

clusive use <strong>of</strong> tlie mine boss. The law requires that <strong>the</strong> air in all collieries<br />

shall be measured at least once per week at <strong>the</strong> inlet, at <strong>the</strong> outlet, and at<br />

or near <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> all gangwaj^s, and all <strong>the</strong> measurements to be reported<br />

to <strong>the</strong> inspector once per month. But this is not done because <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

no instrument at hand. There are exceptions, however, where <strong>the</strong> air is
