Q. Do 3'ou think a crush on No: 1 would have any effect on No. 3 ?<br />

A. I do.<br />

Q. Has tliere at any time been any precaution taken to prevent a crush<br />

passing from one slope to <strong>the</strong> "o<strong>the</strong>r ?<br />

A. Have no recollection <strong>of</strong> any whatever.<br />

Q. Do you know <strong>of</strong> any pillars that have been preserved for that pur-<br />

pose ?<br />

A. Know <strong>of</strong> none ; am<br />

not fully acquainted with <strong>the</strong> mine.<br />

Q. Do.you think <strong>the</strong> parties in charge have done <strong>the</strong>ir duty in regard<br />

to <strong>the</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men in <strong>the</strong>ir employ ?<br />

A. I believe <strong>the</strong>y have, to <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ability.<br />

Q. Do you think any one responsible for <strong>the</strong> men being in <strong>the</strong> mines at<br />

<strong>the</strong> time it caved in ?<br />

A. I know <strong>of</strong> no one.<br />

Q. Did you hear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mines being suspended, owing to <strong>the</strong> crush, or<br />

was it for <strong>the</strong> want <strong>of</strong> orders ?<br />

A. I did not hear <strong>of</strong> work being suspended until after <strong>the</strong> accident ;<br />

A. I do.<br />

A. I do not.<br />

Q. Were you notified at any time not to go to work on account <strong>of</strong><br />

danger ?<br />

A. No, sir.<br />

Q. When did you work last ?<br />

A. Two weeks ago to-day, I believe.<br />

Q. Did you hear any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> employes saying <strong>the</strong>y were afraid to go to<br />

work in No. 3 ?<br />

A. I did.<br />

Q. Who did you hear saying so?<br />

A. James Campbell.<br />

Q. Do you know where he worked ?<br />

A. He worked with me as laborer, and in John McElwee's breast, when<br />

he could get a day's work.<br />

Q. How long before <strong>the</strong> cave in were <strong>the</strong> men afraid <strong>of</strong> working in<br />

No. 3.<br />

A. I heard <strong>of</strong> No. 3 crushing for six months, and that <strong>the</strong> last five or<br />

six weeks it was unsafe to work <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
