Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />

Sir: As inspector <strong>of</strong> mines for <strong>the</strong> Second Schuylkill district, I have<br />

<strong>the</strong> honor to lay before you ray annual report for <strong>the</strong> year 1877, on <strong>the</strong><br />

workings <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> mines, in accordance with <strong>the</strong> general act <strong>of</strong> Assembly<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1870, with a schedule <strong>of</strong> accidents, both fatal and non-fatal, that have<br />

also, a list <strong>of</strong> collieries comprising <strong>the</strong> Second<br />

occurred during that period ;<br />

Schuylkill district, with <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> produced by each colliery,<br />

and number <strong>of</strong> persons employed <strong>the</strong>rein ; also, <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> produced<br />

for each life lost, and some o<strong>the</strong>r matters, which, I hope, will not be<br />

out <strong>of</strong> place.<br />

The total number <strong>of</strong> persons killed during <strong>the</strong> year, from all causes, was<br />

thirty-three, which was <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> thirty-two separate accidents. Two<br />

persons have been killed by <strong>the</strong> same fall. From falls <strong>of</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>s and <strong>coal</strong>,<br />

twenty persons were killed—two from falls <strong>of</strong> ro<strong>of</strong> ; eighteen from falls<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> ; three from explosions <strong>of</strong> powder ; one by being caught nnder<br />

cage, at <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shaft ; one by machinery in <strong>the</strong> breaker ; one<br />

fell from trestling at breaker; two caught by mine cai's inside; one by a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> flying from a shot ; four died from <strong>the</strong> injuries received after<br />

<strong>the</strong> accidents occurred, making a total <strong>of</strong> thirty -three.<br />

There have been 3,805,467 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> produced this year, against<br />

2,891,117 <strong>the</strong> previous year; 3,590,064 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total amount was shipped to<br />

market by rail ; 215,403 tons were used and sold at mines for local con-<br />

sumption. The ratio <strong>of</strong> casualties are, one fatal accident for every 115,317<br />

tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> produced, against 107,078 <strong>the</strong> previous year; one person re-<br />

ceived injuries for every 65,611 tons, against 60,231 tons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> 1876.<br />

There were 10,537 persons employed this year, against 10,218 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year<br />

previous.<br />

Numerically, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> deaths show an increase this year over that<br />

<strong>of</strong> last, whilst <strong>the</strong> output <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong> has been increased 914,350 tons above<br />

that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last year.<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> collieries in <strong>the</strong> district, is fifty-six, <strong>of</strong> which forty-nine<br />

only produced any tonnage this year. Twelve <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> number produced<br />

108,225 tons. Thirty-seven collieries, produced 3,697,242 tons, making<br />

<strong>the</strong> average output <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thirteen collieries 99,925 tons.<br />
