FATAL ACCIDENTS.<br />

Cruslied by Mine Cars.<br />

Tebruary 5. Thomas Flynn was killed at Centralia colliery on <strong>the</strong> 5th<br />

<strong>of</strong> February. The deceased was employed in loading dirt cars under <strong>the</strong><br />

breaker, and went along with <strong>the</strong> driver. On returning to <strong>the</strong> breaker<br />

with <strong>the</strong> empty car, he undertook to detach <strong>the</strong> mule from <strong>the</strong> car while in<br />

motion, and while doing so fell, <strong>the</strong> car running over him, killing him on<br />

<strong>the</strong> spot.<br />

James Ryan, killed at Williamstown colliery August 2 ; age, fifty- five<br />

years. The deceased was a loader, and had loaded his car, and was sitting<br />

on <strong>the</strong> gangway side when <strong>the</strong> tram <strong>of</strong> cars were passing ; <strong>the</strong> last car<br />

struck him, killing him.<br />

Edward Fpdegave, door boy ; age, fourteen. The deceased was stand-<br />

ing behind an open door, when one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cars came down from one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

slant breasts, and when going close bj^ <strong>the</strong> door, <strong>the</strong> car ran <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> track,<br />

striking <strong>the</strong> deceased, killing him.<br />

Charles Shafer, age , driver; killed December 21, at West<br />

Brookside colliery. The deceased was riding in front <strong>of</strong> a loaded car,<br />

standing on <strong>the</strong> bumper, and in passing around a sharp curve in <strong>the</strong> gangway<br />

he fell <strong>of</strong>f, <strong>the</strong> car crushing him so severely that he died shortly after-<br />

ward.<br />

Falls <strong>of</strong> Coal.<br />

Leonard Waldr<strong>of</strong>f, miner, aged forty-eight ; killed at Ben Franklin col-<br />

liery, April 27. The deceased was working in a breast, and had blasted<br />

out <strong>the</strong> bottom bench for two or three yards, leaving <strong>the</strong> upper l)enches<br />

overhanging, without taking <strong>the</strong> necessary precaution to put up a few short<br />

props for his own safety ;<br />

and while at work underneath <strong>the</strong> upper benches<br />

fell on him and fatally injured him—he died <strong>the</strong> same day. This accident<br />

is ano<strong>the</strong>r case <strong>of</strong> gross negligence on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deceased himself.<br />

Andrew Geaghan, age thirty-five ; killed at Merriam colliery, May 2. The<br />

deceased was with his bro<strong>the</strong>r in a breast—<strong>the</strong> vein being nearly flat—and<br />

was filling' a small car or buggy ; while in <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> doing so, his bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

told him <strong>the</strong> top <strong>coal</strong> was working, and he had better come away ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> de-<br />

ceased said he wanted to fill <strong>the</strong> car first ; and while doing so <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> fell<br />

on him, killing him.<br />

Bennel Wise, age forty-two; killed at West Brookside, May 18. The<br />

deceased was opening a new breast, and had just fired a blast in <strong>the</strong> bottom<br />

bench, which failed to bring down <strong>the</strong> upper benches <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong>. The<br />

deceased cautioned his laborer not to go near it, as it was dangerous, yet,<br />

strange to say, in a short time he himself went under it with a pick to get<br />

it down, and while in <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> doing so <strong>the</strong> <strong>coal</strong> fell on him, killing him<br />

instantl3\<br />

Pat Devlin, age twenty-three, single man; killed at Cameron colliery.<br />

May 25. The deceased was working in a new breast when a mass <strong>of</strong> <strong>coal</strong><br />

slipped out <strong>of</strong> side <strong>of</strong> pillar, killing him instantly.
