A piece of art created by Katie Gildert

Lydia, Julie and Lawrence with their creative artwork
From the Director:
Greetings, all. As I wrote in the last Informer, I would be in
the US when the next newsletter deadline came along. So, I
thought I would share a piece that I read and tucked away to
share at some appropriate time. It was written as a graduation
speech, but I think many of the ideas make sense for individuals
of any age.
Enjoy the article and all the best.
Attention Graaduates: There is the kind of education you get
in school and the kind you get afterward. Both are important.
Put them together, and you have wisdom. The trouble is, life
is generally half over before you figure out what is going on.
Graduating seniors can save 25 years of trials, error and hard
knocks by memorizing the lessons of life listed below.
On the average, you learn about one big lesson per year after
you leave high school. In really tough years, you learn two or
three. Some years, you don’t learn anything.
After 40, you forget things and have to learn them again.
Some of this information is borrowed. Some is stolen. Some
may even be original, but that’s doubtful. It’s pretty hard to be
original in a world as old as this one. So here is my list:
FOR STUDENTS HEADED TO THE UK FOR
UNIVERSITY:
The Erasmus Programme was set up by the European Union
nearly 20 years ago to promote mobility of students and staff
across Europe. All the places at UK institutions have been taken
up by students from the continent, but young people in the UK
have never filled those available for them abroad. A study by
the Higher Education Funding Council into why numbers have
been decreasing since 1998 found that finance, worry about
studying a foreign language and fear of the unknown were the
main concerns. This year the British Government decided to
waive the new annual tuition fees of up to £3,000 for the year in
which the student is abroad. In addition, Erasmus is not confined
to language or business students and there are several countries
where you can study abroad in English for other programs.
Samordna opptak (the Norwegian university and college application system) has produced updated
information about how ‘generell studiekompetanse’ (general study competency) can be obtained by students
taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.
Below is a summary of the new regulations as I understand them. Detailed information can be found on:
http://www.samordnaopptak.no/info/generell-studiekompetanse/ib/
An iB diploma gives general study competency if it includes Norwegian A or B (HL or SL).
An iB certificate gives general study competency if it includes Norwegian A or B (HL or SL) And the
following:
•
•
•
•
a minimum of 20 points
AND three SL and three HL subjects completed (or four HL and two SL subjects)
AND a grade 3 or better in all subjects
AND successful completion of ToK, Extended Essay, and CAS.
If a student has an IB Diploma or an acceptable IB Certificate (as indicated above) but without Norwegian,
then they must demonstrate Norwegian competency in one of the ways listed on the website e.g. by taking
the ‘Bergenstest’ and scoring a minimum of 450 points.
Some university courses require specific subjects, and the equivalent IB subjects are indicated on the website.
There is also a conversion table from IB points to Norwegian grade points.
If students wish to receive financial support from the Norwegian government for university or college
studies, then they should also check the nationality and residency regulations which apply in addition to the
requirement for general study competency. http://www.lanekassen.no/Hovedmeny/Stipend-og-lan/Krav/
I was very pleased to hear about the updated regulations at the meeting of the Norwegian IB Schools group
on 5 th February 2009. At College Night on 4 th February I presented the ‘old’ rules, and I am very happy to
report the change through this Informer article! The possibility of students obtaining study competency with
a Certificate including 20+ IB points (providing they fulfil the other requirements) may help our students
who ‘just miss’ achieving the full IB Diploma to continue with their studies at a university or college either in
Norway or elsewhere. I also believe the new conversion table to be a fairer indication of students’ academic
achievement in comparison with the Norwegian school system. Here at ISS we encourage all 11 th and 12 th
grade students to strongly consider challenging themselves by taking the full IB Diploma
programme of six subjects, ToK (Theory of Knowledge), Extended Essay and CAS
(Creativity, Action, Service). I believe these new regulations from Samordnaopptak
reinforce the view that this is a good choice for almost all our students.
H i g h S c h o o l N E W S
It was pleasing to so many of you at our IB Information Evening
and College Night. I hope you found them both informative
and useful. Please be reminded that if you have any questions
in regard to the processes that were outlined, you only have to
pick up a phone or send in an e-mail and we will be more than
happy to seek to provide answers.
The course and college selection process can often seem
overwhelming but once you have the appropriate information
to hand and are able to follow-up on aspects that you may be
unsure of the process becomes manageable and provide positive
outcomes. Next on our agenda in terms of presentations is the
grade 8 transition evening. This takes place on Tuesday 3rd
March between 7:00pm & 9:00pm in the Lovelace Theatre.
Ms Wallace has already sent a reminder home of the date and
time of the meeting and a letter will be e-mailed home shortly
outlining the agenda for the evening. There will be a package
of information available for collection on the evening and for
those of you who are unable to attend, we will ensure that you
receive the information through the mail. Complementing this
information evening there are many related activities taking
place within class time for our grade 8 designed to assist them
and you with the process of transition to the High School.
From an administrative perspective the information that we
gain from the course selection process helps us to build our
schedule/timetable for the academic year 2009 – 2010. As part
of the process this year we have attempted to design a form that
seeks to identify meaningful options that may not currently be
www.isstavanger.no
offered within our High School Programme. As the forms are
returned the feedback is reviewed carefully to ascertain whether
modifications can and should be made. By the end of April we
are seeking to confirm all student course selections.
As I write our High School students have returned from a
successful Model United Nations (MUN) trip to The Hague and
I would like to thank Mr Næss and Ms Wright for chaperoning
this event as well as organizing (with Mr Keerman) the early
morning classes in preparation for the MUN conferences. On
the sports front our basketball teams are making good progress
and I hope to report on the NECIS tournaments in the next
Informer.
Currently our Student Council is in the process of preparing for
this year’s Valentine’s Dance which actually takes place on 14th
February this year! Following are a number of events that are
on the horizon and some additional reminders in regard to use
of internet and online safety:
Parent/Student-Teacher Conferences – 12th & 13th March
We are now past the mid-point of the third quarter and this
means the onset of the parent teacher conferences. Earlier in
February you will have received a conference e-mail request and
if you have not yet responded please do so as soon as possible.
Please remember that we welcome both parents and students at
these meetings. Conferences will be held on the Thursday 12th
Freedom From Chemical Dependency
As part of the development of the High School Pastoral
Programme in recent years we have invited various individuals
and groups to come and visit the High School to speak about
pertinent issues. We are pleased to advise you that on Friday 6th
March visitors from a group called ‘Freedom From Chemical
Dependency’ will be visiting the school and meeting with each
of the grade levels. Nurse Melhus has outlined more details in
her section of the Informer.
Online safety
Earlier in the month Ms Wallace and I sent out a communication
alerting parents to the potential dangers in using the internet
at home and school and I thought it pertinent to extend the
discussion a little further in this edition of the Informer.
There are very few people in our community who are not
’connected’ through one form of electronic communication
equipment or another. A mobile phone isn’t just a phone
anymore. With texting, cameras, and web capacities, there are
many ways to send and receive information. Instant messaging
has almost superseded email, and chat rooms, blogs (electronic
diaries) and multi-purpose online services are the ‘must use’
now.
In this dizzying environment of digital possibilities it is
essential that teachers and parents are ‘digitally literate’ too,
and keenly aware of the potential for misuse of technology.
This has been increasingly highlighted in the local press, many
educational and family guidance websites, and for good reason
with cyberbullying and digital predation being two of the main
problems.
A cyberbully is defined as “anyone who repeatedly misuses
technology to harass, intimidate, bully or terrorize another
person. Such behavior usually takes the form of inappropriate
and hurtful rumors or threats sent through e-mails, instant
messages, text messages, or Web site posts, with the sender
often anonymous or disguised as someone else.” Victims and
bystanders are reluctant to admit or report these actions until
they are desperate enough to involve adults. Cyberbullies will
often have more than one victim and will continue until they
get caught.
It is worth remembering though, that no computer or mobile
phone and therefore no person is really anonymous in
cyberspace. People tend to have the impression that everything
that happens in cyberspace is temporary and fleeting, but
the truth is that communication in cyberspace leaves a trail.
Cyberspace reaches far and wide and deep in to the hard drives
of individual computers in classrooms and private homes. More
important, behaviors in cyberspace (yes, words are deeds) are
downloadable, printable, and sometimes punishable by law.
While technology serves to connect people and connect them
almost instantly, it also has reduced the ‘think time’ between
an idea, opinion or action and confidentiality or privacy. In
the case of an email or text message, once sent it is out of the
sender’s control and can be passed on to anyone, anywhere.
The forum of a chat room broadens the audience with limited
control of the recipients/participants and blogs, by their very
nature, are open to anyone and everyone. You may have to ‘join’
by submitting a few details but essentially all communications
or postings are public domain, and these days, public doesn’t
mean local, it means global! The sender’s data can make appear
to be older or younger than they are.
Chat rooms and other online services have been created to
increase the spontaneity of communication. Along with this
came the possibility of creating new or alternate identities
through the choice of names, or profiles. Our young adolescents
are attracted to these forms of communication and they certainly
can be fun – however, there are increasing numbers of cases
of cyber bullying incidents as well as an increasing number of
‘digital predators’ using chat rooms and the online services to
identify and ‘stalk’ or ‘groom’ their victims.
So what can adults do to prevent and address cyber bullying?
Adults seldom are present in the online environments frequented
by children and youth. Therefore, it is extremely important that
adults pay close attention to the cyber bullying and the activities
of children and youth when using these new technologies.
suggestions for parents and tips to help prevent cyber
bullying include:
Keep your home computer(s) in easily viewable places, such
as a family room or kitchen.
•
Talk regularly with your child about on-line activities he or
she is involved in.
•
•
•
Talk specifically about cyber bullying and encourage
your child to tell you immediately if he or she is the
victim of cyber bullying, cyberstalking, or other illegal
or troublesome on-line behavior.
Encourage your child to tell you if he or she is aware of
others who may be the victims of such behavior.
Explain that cyber bullying is harmful and
unacceptable behavior. Outline your expectations for
responsible online behavior and make it clear that there
will be consequences for inappropriate behavior.
Although adults must respect the privacy of children and
youth, concerns for your child’s safety may sometimes
override these privacy concerns. Tell your child that you
may review his or her on-line communications if you think
H i g h S c h o o l N E W S
Tips for dealing with cyber bullying that your child has
Because cyber bullying can range from rude comments to lies,
•
Try to identify the individual doing the cyber bullying.
Even if the cyberbully is anonymous (e.g., is using a fake
If the cyber bullying is coming through e-mail or a cell
the cyberbully. Of course, the cyberbully may assume a
different identity and continue the bullying.
Contact your school. If the cyber bullying is occurring
Consider contacting the cyberbully’s parents. These
parents may be very concerned to learn that their child has
a stop to the bullying. On the other hand, these parents
Present proof of the cyber bullying (e.g., copies of an e-mail
Consider contacting someone for legal advice in cases of
serious cyber bullying.
Contact the police if cyber bullying involves acts such as:
• Harassment, stalking, or hate crimes
• Child pornography
As we all know, bringing up our children is the most important
job that any of us will ever do. I hope that everyone takes these
points in the intended spirit—as helpful, actionable information
not scare tactics. It is a daunting, but exciting, journey and we
are all on it together. In the spring we be holding an information
Safety
For everyone who uses the drop-off zone, please remember to
pull all the way forward rather than stop right in front of the
door. Students can then walk along the sidewalk safely into the
building. It will mean 20 extra steps, but when you stop early, it
makes the situation more dangerous. We have instructed those
staff on duty to ask for your names of any driver not following
this safety rule.
We have many parents of children in Pre-School 3 and Pre-
School 4. When parking in this area, please drive very slowly,
and assume a family is walking near your car. Please don’t park
next to the gate as this makes it harder for others to enter and
exit the car park safely.
I also want to remind parents and students that school rules apply
outside school hours. Running in the hallway is as dangerous in
the evening and on weekends as during the school day. One
potential area to focus is the steps leading to the theatre. No
jumping is allowed on these steps; the steps are meant for access
to the theatre, not as a play area.
Primary School Roundtable Discussion
Thank you to the eight parents who came to the roundtable
discussion on 3 February. We discussed the following topics:
safety regarding parking, safety regarding the drop-off zone,
options for milk purchase, weekly newsletters via email versus
a hard copy, playground rules and supervision, bus safety and
rules for students on the bus, the positive aspects of Spirit Week
and activity offerings such as dance and gymnastics that might
be more suited for girls. I appreciate the feedback so we can
continue to improve our offerings at ISS.
Student-Led Conferences
Thank you to students, parents and teachers who took time to
take part in student-led conferences. I hope you were able to
review progress made and set learning goals for the future.
International Schools’ Assessment
You should have received your child’s results on the International
School’s Assessment. Teachers are using the results of the
assessment to inform our instruction and make learning more
effective for your children. At the same time, we look for
trends over time so we can review our curricular offerings and
determine the best methods and topics for gaining knowledge,
learning skills and building understanding.
Ski Day for Families of Students in Grades 4-5
A bus has been reserved for 29 March for families of children
in Grades 4 and 5 to enjoy a day of skiing together in Sirdal. A
letter will be sent from Mr. David Tremblay who will offer some
skiing lessons and make arrangements for the trip.
Inge and Inge
We have a special treat coming to ISS in April for students in
Grades 1, 2, 6 and our Dutch classes. You will find a separate
article in this issue of The Informer in Dutch that tells more
about the authors. We will pass this detailed information to
students in English when the authors visit in April.
Inge Bergh and Inge Misschaert are from Belgium and have
presented to children in schools and libraries in Flanders. This
year they were invited to Antwerp to perform it to the children
on the Antwerp Book Fair, which is Flanders largest book fair.
They will not sit and tell things. They get the children to move
around, sing and write. They hope to show the children how it
feels to look for inspiration, how stressful it often is when one
faces a deadline, how exciting it is to bring your story and have
others reading or hearing it, and how even more exciting it is
when an editor selects a story to be turned into a book. Then
they get to the work with the editor, the illustrator, the printer,
the warehouse and the sales company. All this is done without
explaining, but actually doing it.
These grades have been chosen as they did not have as much
interaction with last year’s author.
Thank you to the NTC Stavanger Board for helping sponsor
their visit and to Mr. and Mrs. De Coster for hosting the authors
in their home.
Pre-Schoolers in their element

All Primary School students have been invited to perform music of their choice for their grade this semester. Many students have
been excited for this opportunity; others have preferred to sit back and listen. Numerous performers thus far exhibited skills
that have taken years to develop; some have simply enjoyed the chance for an impromptu creation. All have contributed to the
enrichment of our music classes!
As each student performed, his/her confidence has visibly grown, and most have asked for another day to present more music! After
all students get their first-turn-chance, everyone will indeed have a second opportunity. The rest of our time in class this semester
is being spent on the joy of singing our very best with a variety of music.
Presentations so far have included piano, recorders, singing (solos and duets), guitar, violin, xylophone and handbells. Most amazing
perhaps, has been the creation of many self-compositions that have required much forethought.
Students have been coached to perform with poise. They have also learned audience etiquette, which is, in a nutshell, to show
appreciation for the one in the spotlight! They are encouraged to sit quietly and to show only encouragement. Each performer and
class have followed these guidelines admirably.
One can see the signed autographs of all performers on music posters that are hanging in the music hall. There will be more
autographs soon as several more students enjoy their day in the spotlight. Hats off to all Primary School musicians!
Time-out
ISS Sports News
Welcome back to school and to a brand new year. 2009 has a
lot in store for us as an athletic department and school. We are
going to four tournaments that will include Antwerp, Belgium;
Sigtuna, Sweden; Luxembourg and Aberdeen, Scotland. We
are also going to be hosting a rugby tournament here in
Stavanger on May 28th and 29th. It will be an exciting time
and busy atmosphere.
Our tournaments are under way. The Junior Varsity Boys
team just returned from a great trip in Aberdeen. Thanks to the
International School of Aberdeen, all the boys had a fantastic
time and captured 3rd place! The boys worked very hard and
showed a fighting spirit as they took on the International School
of Aberdeen, London and Egham along with local teams as
well.
Those boys that participated were:
Kevin Fredeen
Halvdan Kielland
Ryan McClurg
Joe Messina
Tyler Miller
David Ramsay
Tugberk Sengerer
Spencer Snipes
Ryan Vandrey
Matt Wesling
Thanks boys for a fun and memorable trip. Also, a huge thank
you to Coach Espen and Coach Knudsen for chaperoning the
team in Aberdeen!
The Junior Varsity Boys 2 team played three teams this
past weekend and came away with some wins. They hustled
hard and finished the games with an intensity that helped them
improve their basketball skills.
Junior Varsity Girls had a great game against the
SBBK girls. They showed spirit, determination and teamwork
throughout the game. For further development of their skills,
the girls challenged their parents on friday the 13th. It must
have been bad luck for the parents, as the JV girls took the lead
at the end of the game and won by 3 points! Well Done!
The JV teams have worked hard all season. As the seasons come
to an end, they should be proud of the progress they have made.
Basic skills have improved greatly as well as fitness levels.
Thanks for a great season so far and let’s finish on a high
note by playing our final games this year with purpose and
enthusiasm.
The Varsity Boys have their eyes set on a tough looking
tournament in Antwerp. Coach Henry has prepared them to
face the formidable challenge of other NECIS schools. They
have a couple of local games before colliding with the NECIS
teams in mid-March.
Coach Cat and the Varsity Girls took on a local team and
saw that their teamwork and energy has helped them improve
since the beginning of the season. He is looking forward to the
competition in Antwerp for the NECIS tournament March
13th.
Coach Cox, Hettema and Hogarth are keeping the NECIS
Swim Team busy in the pool. Swimmers have chosen their
swimming events in NECIS and will be working hard to
improve their times and strive towards personal records. Stay
safe in the water and prepare hard for March 27th when you
leave to show NECIS what Stavanger can do in the water!
If you need any information on that tournament or any
other tournament this year, please look at the Athletics site.
The athletics site can be found on the left hand side of www.
isstavanger.no. Please email me with any other questions you
may have about the tournaments.
As always, please contact us by email if you have any questions or
News from the health, security, safety and environment (hsse) committee
As our school community was made aware through earlier
communications, there was a malfunction in the circuit breaker
cabinet for our spotlights in the theatre that started smouldering just
before 22:00, Thursday, 5 February. After the BATS performance
of Cinderella, the vaktmester noticed smouldering from the cabinet
and alerted the fire department who came quickly and put an end
to the smouldering. Smouldering was limited to the cabinet, about
one meter high and 50 cm wide. No flames caused anything to burn
except in the metal cabinet. Emergency services advised school be in
session on Friday. We are lucky the theatre has a separate ventilation
system from the rest of the school. The theatre and other areas were
inspected on Friday morning to determine more about safe access,
which was confirmed.
In order that the theatre can be completely cleaned from top to
bottom without disruption by a cleaning company, the theatre will
be closed for three weeks. While lack of theatre access presents some
challenges, we were very happy that no one was injured. We will also
use this event to learn how we can make the school even safer.
As I have mentioned before, a safe bus
transport is one of our deepest concerns.
Therefore, in January we had a meeting with
the three bus companies to discuss availability
of seat belts in all buses. Two of the companies
already have seat belts in all buses. The third
company, Veolia, has promised that they will
do their utmost to use only buses with seat
belts for the transport of our students.
Now the Winter holiday is near and a well-deserved break for all of
us. Many of you are going away for some days, while other spend
the week here in the area.
To all of you – take good care of yourselves, and return safely after
the break.
will be talking with our High School Students on Friday 6th March
As part of our health education program and ongoing commitment to prevention
and wellness, we have invited health educators from FCD Educational Services to
join our community for one day on Friday 6th March.
FCD is a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention for
schools.
Their mission is to:
• Provide educational, communities with the guidance and training necessary
to implement comprehensive, effective approaches to substance abuse
prevention
• Educate students on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol
and other drugs
• Teach students how to recognize the early warning signs of substance abuse
and to intervene appropriately
• Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding
alcohol and other drug use
• Encourage and support the non use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs
during the growing years.
FCD educators are highly trained health professionals who have achieved long
term recovery from alcohol and/or other drug addictions. This unique “I’ve been
there” prospective not only enhances the credibility of their message, but provides
students with role models for happy, healthy drug-free living.
A parent evening will be held later this school year, where a panel of experts will
be on hand to answer any questions you might have.
Ms Christine Kemp CKemp@isstavanger.no
Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our RagS to
RiC hES Ca m pa i g n. Many bags will be delivered to FRETEX in
the near future.
SWEC’s ‘Boxes for Bumblebees’ raffle is not going as well
as they’d hoped so thay want to extend the sale of raffle tickets
into March. Have you seen all the colourfully wrapped prizes
they have donated? There are four bags of them displayed on
their notice board outside the cafeteria. Please support their
efforts to raise money for
Bumblebee Conservation. What
would early summer be like without
these delightful insects buzzing
slowly around looking
for sustenance after their winter
hibernation? Check out www.
bumblebeeconservationtrust.co.uk for more information.
YEPA’s Ceilidh was well attended by a very enthusiastic and
energetic group of students and parents. Thank you all for
coming! The Jurassic Ceilidh Band were lively and got everyone’s
toes tapping and hands clapping. We would like to thank the
band very much for their contribution to the evening’s success
and also for giving their services free of charge. Kr.2811 was
raised for Min Dag i Dag and Livsglede for Eldre.
We are happy to acknowledge some recent donations. Ben Neil
gave kr 46:5 which he’d earned during the Christmas holiday
period - this to be added to our funds for Action Aid. Thank
you, Ben. Also for Action Aid, kr 902 was donated by teachers,
students and parents in PS 3 from the proceeds of a Class Cafe!
Well done Pre-school 3! Thirdly, Mrs, Svihus, on behalf of the
Art Department, gave kr 1060 for the ‘Touching Lives’ Appeal.
This was from the sale of HS students’ art work. Thank you
all!
Looking ahead to March there are two events coming up - Red
Nose Day and a Coffee House to celebrate World Water Day.
More information about these from IFG students below.
nB! We are looking for performers for the Coffee House
from faculty and parents too. Share your talents! We’d love
to hear from you so get in touch soon!
Lastly, the date for the Nearly New Sale in April has
been brought forward one week. It will now be on saturday,
18th April at 10:00 with set-up on Friday, 17th, 15:30 - 17:00.
You may sign up for tables at any time - kr 300 per table per
family (- two tables kr 500).
RED NOSE DAY - 11 March
On the 11th of March IFG, YEPA and SWEC are planning to
hold RED NOSE DAY at ISS. red noses will be on sale
from Monday 9th.
But what is Red Nose Day we hear you cry? Well, in schools,
offices and homes across the UK, everyone wears - you’ve
guessed it - the latest Red Nose and does whatever tickles their
fancy to raise cash. You name it, they do it! From sponsored
kissathons and flamboyant fancy dress to gungetastic trials and
naked pole vaulting. Ok, we made the last one up.
At ISS the occasion will be marked by a Red Nose Day bakesale,
and we encourage students to help this worthy cause by buying
cakes, wearing Red Noses or making donations. All the money
we raise will help to transform lives. That’s because Comic
Relief spends it to support long-term projects which help people
to help themselves across the UK and Africa.
The money spent in the UK goes towards helping victims of
domestic violence, young people who abuse substances or are
homeless, refugees and many other vulnerable people.
In Africa the money is used to help combat HIV and AIDS,
fight the discrimination towards women and girls and help
people affected by conflict and those living in urban slums.
For more information go to www.rednoseday.com, where you
can read more about where your money goes and what other
events are taking place to raise money.
Parent Association News
BUDDY FAMILIES
Did you move to Norway without knowing anyone? In the
school holidays? At Christmas time, Easter or during the
summer break? Would it have been nice to be able to call
someone and meet up? Would a friendly face have helped?
The confusion of relocating can sometimes be overwhelming.
As the Parent Association plays a strong part in the sociallife
of ISS families, we feel it would be good if we could take
a more active role in welcoming new families to Stavanger.
Whether this be during term time or the holiday periods, we
are aiming to set up a scheme to help newly arrived families
as they find their feet in Norway.
If you can remember how it felt, and if you feel you would
now like to help others, then you might be interested in our
new ‘Buddy Family’ scheme. We need to set up a list of
potential ‘Buddy Families’ so that we can introduce families
to each other….they may be living in the same area, or have
children of similar ages. It may involve anything from a
simple phone-call to showing people around your area or
sharing information.
we hope and believe this system will make the settlingin
process smoother and less disorientating, as well as
establishing some firm friendships. every iss parent is
automatically a member of the PA, so please do not feel
you must be a Board member to help us.
If you are interested in signing up as a potential ‘Buddy’,
contact jane.grieve@getmail.no and we will start our list.
Friends of ISS Coffee Mornings
are each and every Monday morning.
We meet in the cafeteria, and everyone is welcome to come
and join us
between 8:30am and 10:00am.
Sometimes we are busy knitting, chatting, doing craft
activities or finding out things that are happenening
locally.
We have started a Yahoo group for communications - to join
simply send an email to:
friendsofiss-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
You can email our group to ask questions, find out what
is happening and keep up with the latest events around
How does it work?
You run/walk along your coach (an experienced psychotherapist) and
talk about your troubles or whatever you wish to sort out.
The speed is adjusted to your fitness.
What is the advantage of combining a therapy session with
jogging/walking?
Gentle jogging provides you with a multi-effect:
During exercise the brain releases endorphins which make you feel
good.
Both brain halves are getting stimulated. This has a relaxing effect on
you.
You will feel more creative. My best ideas I get while jogging along!
Sorting out your thoughts and feelings while jogging along will provide
you with an immediate sense of wellbeing.
Is this method suitable for you?
You will get good results
 If you are feeling down
 If you are experiencing anxiety
If you are struggling with excess weight
If you are struggling with problems at work
If you are feeling stuck in any way
