News from the health, security, safety and environment (hsse) committee As our school community was made aware through earlier communications, there was a malfunction in the circuit breaker cabinet for our spotlights in the theatre that started smouldering just before 22:00, Thursday, 5 February. After the BATS performance of Cinderella, the vaktmester noticed smouldering from the cabinet and alerted the fire department who came quickly and put an end to the smouldering. Smouldering was limited to the cabinet, about one meter high and 50 cm wide. No flames caused anything to burn except in the metal cabinet. Emergency services advised school be in session on Friday. We are lucky the theatre has a separate ventilation system from the rest of the school. The theatre and other areas were inspected on Friday morning to determine more about safe access, which was confirmed. In order that the theatre can be completely cleaned from top to bottom without disruption by a cleaning company, the theatre will be closed for three weeks. While lack of theatre access presents some challenges, we were very happy that no one was injured. We will also use this event to learn how we can make the school even safer. As I have mentioned before, a safe bus transport is one of our deepest concerns. Therefore, in January we had a meeting with the three bus companies to discuss availability of seat belts in all buses. Two of the companies already have seat belts in all buses. The third company, Veolia, has promised that they will do their utmost to use only buses with seat belts for the transport of our students. Now the Winter holiday is near and a well-deserved break for all of us. Many of you are going away for some days, while other spend the week here in the area. To all of you – take good care of yourselves, and return safely after the break. This is done in the 9th grade. The BCG vaccine is NOT compulsory as many countries do not use this vaccine as in the United States. HOWEVER Montoux Testing which is carried out before the vaccine is given is compulsory. The dates of the Montoux testing will be March 9th OR March 16th a letter will be sent home with more detailed information to all our 9th grade students. Please do not hesitate to call the nurse’s office or e-mail me with any questions you may have . A Polio booster can be given also at this time. fcd ed u c A T i o n A l se r v i c e will be talking with our High School Students on Friday 6th March As part of our health education program and ongoing commitment to prevention and wellness, we have invited health educators from FCD Educational Services to join our community for one day on Friday 6th March. FCD is a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention for schools. Their mission is to: • Provide educational, communities with the guidance and training necessary to implement comprehensive, effective approaches to substance abuse prevention • Educate students on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol and other drugs • Teach students how to recognize the early warning signs of substance abuse and to intervene appropriately • Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use • Encourage and support the non use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years. FCD educators are highly trained health professionals who have achieved long term recovery from alcohol and/or other drug addictions. This unique “I’ve been there” prospective not only enhances the credibility of their message, but provides students with role models for happy, healthy drug-free living.
