At the time of writing these letters, Bernard was governor of Massachusetts Bay
and Lord Barrington was his political backer in England. The letters are chiefly concerned
with Bernard's personal affairs, with securing places and pensions for himself
and his children and increase of salary. Appendixes consist of papers relating to the
functions of a provincial governor and a statement of the course of events in Massachusetts
at the time of the tea troubles.

Giulia Gonzaga was a cousin by marriage of Isabella d'Este and as a young girl in
1525 went under the protection of that great lady to Rome. She married Vespasiano
Colonna and at 15 was a widow and the inheritor of a large part of her husband's vast
estate. She never married again and after holding court at Fondi for some years, retired
to a semi-religious life in a convent at Naples. The story of her life illuminates
the period of the Italian reformation.

The historical value of the letters is very slight. They are chiefly concerned with
