The substance of this volume was first used as the Baldwin lectures for 1911 at the
University of Michigan, under the Baldwin Lectureship for the Establishment and Defense
of Christian Truth. Written not so much for scholars and theologians as for the
general reader who thinks for himself and who is troubled by some of the assumptions
of dogmatic theology. The book is frank, practical and hopeful.
