Census, but, as the mortality statistics are now collected and
published annually by the permanent Census Bureau, the subject
was omitted from the Thirteenth Census.
The Abstract volume is probably the one which will be
most generally used by those in search of ordinary statistical
information, for it is estimated that it gives all the information
on the Census that nine-tenths of the people want. It is a condensation
of the complete census reports, both tables and text,
and not merely a compilation of tables.
This volume is interesting in its make up, and is published
in fifty-two different editions. It is divided into two sections.
The first relates to the United States as a whole, to the different
states, and to the principal cities, covering the subjects
included in the final volumes; the second part relates to some
one state, its counties, cities and other civil divisions. The
first section contains the principal statistics of all states in condensed
form, while the second section gives the minute statistics
of a particular state. Those who are interested in Pennsylvania
will want the Pennsylvania edition, while those interested
in Ohio, Nebraska or Massachusetts, will want the editions
including those states as the second section of the Abstract.
A limited number of the bound volumes of these combined
editions have been published and these may be obtained by individuals
from the Census Office only, but the Abstract alone
and any state supplement may be secured from the Superintendent
of Documents for one dollar plus the price of the
state volume desired.
Debate Index Supplement
In July 1911 this Library published a Debate Index, which
combined in one list the indexes to all the debaters' manuals in
the Library. The edition was exhausted in a little more than
a year, and in November 1912 a new and enlarged edition was
published. The following list is a supplement to the second
edition, and indexes the debaters' manuals which have been
