Rules for Lending Books
i. Hours. The adult Lending Rooms of the Central and branch
libraries are open daily from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m., Sundays and holidays
excepted. The Childrens Rooms are closed during school hours.
2. Borrowers. Any resident or taxpayer of Pittsburgh is entitled
to borrow books from the Library by signing the proper application
and agreement and receiving a borrower's card. In the case of a child
under fourteen years of age the application must also be signed by the
parent or guardian.
Non-residents may borrow books on payment of one dollar a year
in advance. If employed or attending school in the city the guarantee
of a resident will be accepted instead of this fee.
Temporary residents may borrow books on making a deposit of
five dollars, or more if deemed desirable, this sum to be returned to the
depositor upon surrender of his borrower's card.
3. Borrowers' cards. A borrower's card may be used at the Central
and branch libraries.
Each borrower is responsible for all books charged on his card.
Change of residence must be reported immediately.
Lost cards should be reported at once. Adult cards will be replaced
fourteen days after notice of such loss. Juvenile cards will be replaced
fourteen days after notice of loss is given upon the payment of a fine
of five cents, or replaced without payment six months after notice of
loss is given.
4. Issue of books. Holders of adult cards may borrow as many
books of non-fiction as are needed at one time, together with two books
of fiction, only one of which shall have been published within the current
or the preceding year. Holders of juvenile cards may borrow two
juvenile books at one time.
Books may be kept two weeks, except some new and popular
books, which may be kept but seven days. Magazines are lent for seven
days only.
5. Renewals. Non-fiction and certain standard fiction may be once
renewed for two weeks from the date on which the request for renewal
is received.
Other fiction, magazines and seven-day books are not renewable.
Requests for renewal may be made in person, by mail, or by telephone.
In each case the call number of the book, the number of the
borrower's card, and the date on which the book is due must be given.
In return the borrower will receive a renewal card, which must be
brought with the book when it is returned.
