Exhibition of a single object – a fragment
of a bronze sculpture of an arm and hand
clasping the hilt of a sword with a finial in
the form of a two-headed eagle. The fragment
was discovered in 2005 during excavations
of the Roman town of Lucentum.

This collection of Urartu and Caucasian
antiquities was presented to the Hermitage
by the collector Torkom Demirjian,
owner of the Ariadne Galleries in New York,
through the Hermitage Foundation (USA)
in late 2009. It was one of the most superb
acquisitions made by the Oriental Department
in recent years.

Works from the Hermitage and from the
collection of the Imperial Porcelain Factory
Company were brought together in
this exhibition, devoted to the depiction
of that most romantic of flowers, the rose,
on ceramics produced at the famous factory
from the middle of the 18th century to the
present day. The selection demonstrated
the changing technical devices and styles
used to depict roses by different artists.

created in Besieged leningrad
in 1942

The architect A. Nikolsky produced this
sheet of drawings between October 1941 and
February 1942, during the terrible Siege of
Leningrad. It shows Prospekt Stachek near
the current site of the Avtovo metro station,
with the buildings erected there between
1937 and 1941.
Tonino guerra. honey

Marking the 90th birthday of the celebrated
Italian poet, writer, dramatist, artist
and sculptor Tonino Guerra, the exhibition
presented the book Honey, produced
by the Rare Books from St. Petersburg
publishing house, and four mosaic panels
crated by Marco Bravura after drawings
by Guerra.

monumental sculptor, was displayed
in the Hall of Dionysus in the Antiquity Department,
reflecting a practice established
in the State Hermitage Museum in recent
years of displaying contemporary and Classical
works alongside each other.

This monumental work by Anish Kapoor,
a British artist of Indian origin, was displayed
in the Great Courtyard of the Winter
Palace. The vast polished steel hemisphere
reflected the sky and clouds and the distorted
facades of the Hermitage buildings.
